Richard (RJ) Eskow: Forget Michigan. Worry About Rep. Steny Hoyer (Corporate Party - MD) and Social Security

Forget Michigan. Worry about Steny Hoyer.

While most political eyes are fixed on Romney's primary results, the middle class faces a threat to its financial security right in the heart of the Capitol. The Democratic Party does, too.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, who is the living embodiment of Washington's corporatized politics, is once again pushing a "Grand Bargain" that would cut Social Security and Medicare - and result in more electoral losses like the ones he helped bring upon his party in 2010.

Hoyer is the Lobbyists' Legislator, the Revolving-Door Representative, the Minority Whip who really drives floor votes for the Corporate Party rather than the electorate. Hoyer's pseudo-centrist deficit pitch will please the rich individuals and corporations that have given him one of the biggest campaign war chests in Congress.

It will also help Republicans run a repeat of their 2010 play, when they took the House by running to the Democrats' left on Medicare and Social Security.

Losing Game

Corporate Democrats like Hoyer makes the GOP's work easy. He proposed raising the retirement age to 70 just a few months before the 2010 election. The GOP responded to that kind of talk, as well as the President's "Grand Bargain" overtures and right-leaning deficit panel rhetoric, by writing a "Seniors' Bill of Rights" that painted Democrats as Social Security and Medicare cutters.

Republicans should have been politically vulnerable on Social Security. They'd recently failed to pass a highly unpopular privatization plan, and prospective Speaker John Boehner refused to take benfit cuts off the table. Enter Steny Hoyer, who came to the Republicans' rescue by saying "We should consider a higher retirement age or one pegged to lifespan" in July of 2010. That led to headlines like "Republicans and Democrats Lining Up Behind Major Cuts to Social Security and Medicare" - and that was on the liberal-leaning Talking Points Memo website. A headline in the right-leaning Washington Times reading "Both parties mull raising retirement age" was featured below a large color photograph of Hoyer.

Hoyer's comments undercut House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Republicans played Hoyer and other Blue Dog Democrats for suckers that year (unless they were working from a shared script), luring them into making these comments with promises of a grand deal - then nailing them at the polls by posing as these programs' defenders.

Now he's at it again. By pushing for yet another would-be "Grand Bargain" in an election year, Hoyer's backing a course of action that will all but guarantee more electoral defeats for Democrats in 2012.

Steny Hoyer, (MD, D-Corporate)

But then, what do you expect from a guy who raises two-thirds of his money from PACs and the other third from large individual donors, and whose top corporate backers this season include Citigroup and the fiercely anti-union Comcast? At least on paper, Hoyer represents a Maryland district. But too often he represents the cluster of lobbyists and PACs that drive Washington's politics instead. I'ts called the Corporate Party, and Steny's a senior member.

The words and deeds of Corporate Democrats like Steny Hoyer may have more impact on November's election results than anything that happened in Michigan today. If you're worried about good policy for our middle class, worry about Steny Hoyer. And if you're a partisan Democrat, worry about Steny Hoyer.

It could be a happy coincidence, but Hoyer's positions play very well with the lobbyists and corporations who contribute to his campaign war chest - which was more than ten times bigger than that of the average member of the House in 2010. Thanks to OpenSecrets.org, we have the breakdown:

Here's how Hoyer's fundraising compared to that of his peers in the House:

2012-02-29-HOYERTOTRAISEDAVGRAISE.JPG

You don't get that much lettuce unless you're letting the customer toss your salad, if you catch my drift.

Here's where the money came from:

2012-02-29-HOYERSOURCEOFFUNDS.JPG

As you can see, small individual contributions make up only 1 percent of Hoyer's haul. The People's Candidate he ain't. Most of his haul (65 percent) comes from PACs, and the rest of it (34 percent) comes from large individual contributors - that is to say, rich people.

Which contributors favored Hoyer with the most cash this time around?

Citigroup? Really? Ouch.

Steny's Friends

Hoyer's fundraisers have been taking place at venues like Johnny's Half Shell, Bistro Bis, and - with embarrassing regularity - Democratic National Headquarters. Who hosts them? That's public information.

On February 3, for example, a couple of top lawyers from Covington & Burling hosted one for him at the Hotel George. Covington & Burling is the top Wall Street firm known for, mong other things ,writing the legal rationale behind the shell corporation known as "MERS." MERSCorp's shadowy actions played a central role in Wall Street's widespread - and criminal - foreclosure fraud. Attorney General Holder and Deputy AG received justified heat for their tenure at Covington & Burling, which is now raising money for Hoyer. To hobnob with Steny at this event, people paid $5,000 to host it, $2,500 to sponsor it, and $1,500 to attend.

Hoyer's other hosts included Ed Yingling, the former head of the American Bankers Association who was a fierce opponent of the regulation that might have saved the economy, and who kept on preaching his anti-government rhetoric while his industry took billions in taxpayer money .

Ed is now - want to take a guess?- a partner with Covington & Burling. So's another co-host, Muftiah McCartin, a revolving-door veteran who also worked with Hoyer and had a 34-year career as a Hill staffer. Ms. McCartin now works as Special Counsel at Covington.

Then there's Scott DeFife, who's the Executive Vice President for Policy & Government Affairs at the National Restaurant Association. (Surely you remember them - Herman Cain's old organization?)

One fundraiser was co-hosted by Gina Mahony, another door-spinner who worked for Hoyer on the Hill. She now has a high-paying job "lobbying for banks and card companies against the reduced 'swipe fee' rules favored by retailers and merchants." That's not some muckracker's description of her work. That wording is from her firm's website. What the rest of us might call an expos?, they call "bragging."

Another was hosted by Dayle Cristinzio, another ex-Hill staffer and Hoyer employee who now works at law firm Foley Hoag as a non-lawyer staffer in its "Government Strategies" (that is, lobbying) division. Foley Hoag's slogan is "Driving Business Advantage."

The list goes on - but you get the idea.

Steny's War

Steny Hoyer has been on an anti-retirement security crusade for years. In April of 2009, at the height of our Wall Street-caused financial crisis, he wrote an editorial for the Wall Street Journal - the banking industry's house organ - on the subject of government deficits. Was Hoyer the Democrats bearding the lions in their den, fighting the good fight for the American majority in the belly of the beast?

Not exactly. While he did make some tepid statements about the need for short-term deficit spending at the height of the crisis - something even the Goldman Sachs crowd accepted - the capstone of Hoyer's editorial was his clarion call for cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

He brought up the subject of cuts again in May 2009. (He called it "reform." The Corporate Party loves to call cuts "reforms.") He was all over the media on the topic in 2010, as mentioned earlier. He fought to keep an increase in the retirement age "on the table" in February of 2011.

It's a crusade with him. And he gets the issue completely wrong.

Steny's Spin

It's important to decode and debunk his rhetoric, because its the same industry-driven spin we've been hearing for years - spin which gets repeatedly debunked and yet is too well-financed to die.

"The the single most important thing we can do to get our budget under control," wrote Hoyer, "is to deal with the costs of our entitlement programs: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid." This sentence repeats one of the most disingenuous and destructive falsehoods now circulating among policymakers and media types. The truth is that Social Security is forbidden by law from contributing to budget deficits.

Cutting Social Security will never help "get our budget under control" - but there are some powerful people who want to see it cut for other, more selfish reasons. Hoyer went on to say this about the one of the most successful and popular programs in our nation's history: "We know the policy options necessary to make Social Security fiscally sound: restraining the growth of benefits, bringing more revenues into the system, and raising the retirement age, among others."

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Alan Greenspan, who's hardly a hero of the 99 percent, chaired the commission that stabilized Social Security in the 1980s. They made the necessary adjustments back then - including raising the retirement age - so that the "age wave" of baby boomers and other demographic issues were fully addressed.

Here's what Alan Greenspan didn't see coming, because nobody did: That the wealthy corporate types who read the Journal's editorial pages would capture so much more of the nation's wealth in the coming decades. The cap on payroll taxes (currently about $106,000) was designed to capture 90 percent of the nation's income. But because so much wealth has been transferred to the highest earners, it's projected to capture only 83 percent in 2014.

Social Security still has a $2.6 trillion trust fund. But once that runs out, payroll tax revenues in our newer, more inequitable United States are projected to cover only about 78 percent of benefits. That will happen sometime in the mid-2030's, unless we lift the cap and perhaps make some other changes as well.

That's not what Hoyer told his Wall Street readers. He concluded, "We simply need the bipartisan will to choose and implement such reforms" - and by "reforms" he meant "cuts." Why would he take a position like that?

The Payback

The same is true for Medicare and Medicaid. Their long-term cost problems, which are enormous, don't stem from overly-generous benefits. Other countries give better coverage at much less cost. Our cost problems are the result of a basic structural problem: We're the only developed nation with a profit-based health system, which includes insurers, hospitals and drug manufacturers.

And we're the only one in which these for-profit companies drive the political process with campaign cash. But Hoyer didn't say that. Perhaps not coincidentally, the industry that gave the most to Hoyer's war chest was insurance. Next came "health professionals," which can include overpaid specialists and doctors who own high-cost clinics and group practices. Pharmaceutical and health product companies came in eighth.

All of these industries would lose a lot of money if we seriously tackled our Medicare and Medicaid health care cost problem. Hoyer's solution? Raise the retirement age and cut benefits instead.

How convenient.

Stopping Steny

Now Hoyer's prepared to run another self-aggrandizing play, grabbing some newspaper headlines for himself by placing his party's prospects - and the retirement security of millions of Americans - in danger. That will please his friends, and will certainly help the Republicans, but it's a sure route to disaster for the nation and his party if he pursues it. He's even saying things like "I will keep pushing to get an agreement before November."

Why it's almost as if he wants ... nah, never mind. That's crazy. Maybe Hoyer, who is seventy years old himself (they held a fundraiser to celebrate his birthday), just assumes that other cash-strapped seventy-year will hold a few fundraisers too.

"Are there no Hotel Georges? Are there no Johnny's Half Shells?"

Whatever Hoyer's motives, poll after poll has shown that solid majorities in both parties reject the Hoyer/GOP view that Social Security or Medicare should be cut to reduce the deficit (which, in any case, isn't affected by Social Security). Hoyer's "bipartisanship" is the mirror image of the bipartisan views outside the Beltway - the ones held by voters.

The Republicans will sort themselves out and field a candidate. If it's Romney, as once again seems likely, the election will turn into even more of a referendum on the Democrats and the economy. Let the GOP decide who it wants to run this year. The Democrats need to decide what they stand for.

As a nonpartisan observer, my greatest concern is the financial security of the middle-class and lower-income people who depend on these programs. Hoyer's promoting all of the usual prefabricated lies, misinformation and spin that put us at risk for destructive and unnecessary cuts.

But if I were a party activist, I suppose the question I would be asking myself would be this: With Democrats like Steny Hoyer, who needs Republicans?

You might ask him that if you're ever down at Johnny's Half Shell.

Obama hails auto bailout, hits back at GOP critics

(AP) ? President Barack Obama proudly embraced his auto industry bailout Tuesday, telling a raucous labor audience that assertions by his Republican presidential challengers that union members profited from taxpayer-paid rescue are a "load of you know what."

Obama delivered a politically sizzling and staunchly pro-union speech to the United Auto Workers just as voters in Michigan, a center of auto manufacturing, went to the polls to cast their ballots in the state's Republican nominating contest.

In a campaign style setting, union president Bob King praised Obama as "the champion of all workers" who "saved our jobs and saved our industry," an introduction that elicited chants of "Four more years!" from a crowd estimated at about 1,700 UAW members.

The speech was part of an Obama strategy to steal some of the political limelight from Republicans on the same days that states hold their GOP primary votes or caucuses.

In highlighting the auto industry's comeback, Obama drew a distinct contrast with Republican presidential candidates such as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, both of whom have said they would not have used government money to save General Motors and Chrysler.

Obama's speech came as auto sales are surging, on a pace to exceed 14 million this year. Auto makers and parts companies added more than 38,000 jobs last year, with industry employment averaging 717,000 for 2011. And automakers have announced plans to add another 13,000 jobs this year.

Romney on Sunday said Obama favored the UAW in the bailout and that the president was "paying off the people that supported him."

Obama did not mention the Republican presidential contenders by name, but he left no doubt they were his targets.

"You've got folks saying. 'Well, the real problem is, what we really disagreed with was the workers, they all made out like bandits; that saving the American auto industry was just about paying back unions,'" Obama said. "Really? Even by the standards of this town, that's a load of you-know-what."

He noted that under the agreement to use taxpayer money to save GM and Chrysler, union members had to agree to reduced wages and that thousands of retirees saw reductions in their health care benefits.

"But they're still talking about you as if you're some special interest that needs to be beaten down," Obama said.

Despite the not-so-veiled references at Republican presidential contenders, the White House insisted Obama's remarks were not a political campaign speech, but rather a policy address about the state of the auto industry.

"These are substantive policy issues that affected hundreds of thousands, even millions of Americans," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And they're very worth speaking about, as president."

The Republican Party weighed in, doubling down on the claim that in authorizing the bailout Obama was simply doing the bidding of labor. "This is an insider deal for his union cronies who got billions in bailout money and are now backing Obama's re-election campaign," said Kirsten Kukowski of the Republican National Committee.

In his speech, Obama cast himself in heroic terms, saying he ran to "make the tough calls and do the right thing no matter what the politics."

In fact, Obama was not alone. Before Obama took office, President George W. Bush, faced with a reluctant Congress, directed more than $17 billion in emergency loans to GM and Chrysler in his final weeks in office. Bush demanded that the companies reduce their debt, negotiate wage and benefit cuts with workers and submit plans to achieve long-term viability.

In a veiled shot at Romney, Obama also said some critics wanted to "let Detroit go bankrupt." But Romney never used that phrase, though it was the headline on a November 2008 opinion piece he wrote for the New York Times. In that opinion piece, Romney called for a managed bankruptcy that would restructure the companies by letting them "shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs."

In his article, Romney added: "The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk."

The president sought to portray himself as a longtime ally of labor, recalling his days as a community organizer working with steel workers who had been laid off when their plants shut down.

"That still drives me today," he said, reiterating a line he uses in political campaign events. "So I'll promise you this: as long as you've got an ounce of fight left in you, I'll have a ton of fight left in me."

Obama also announced that his administration will crack down on unfair trade practices worldwide, a popular theme with labor and a counterpunch to Romney's tough-on-China rhetoric. Obama was signing an executive order creating an Interagency Trade Enforcement Center.

The office will expand the administration's ability to challenge unfair trading practices in China and elsewhere and coordinate enforcement activity across several U.S. government agencies. Obama's most recent budget proposal asks Congress for millions of dollars for the new enforcement center and more U.S. inspectors in China.

The Heritage Foundation and the Urban Institute teamed up earlier this year to publish a report entitled, Eliminating the Individual Mandate: Effects on Premiums, Coverage, and Uncompensated Care.

This report is more detailed in some ways than the CBO report. Specifically, their report analyzes what would happen to health insurance costs, enrollment, and a number of other issues if the requirement to buy health insurance, also referred to as the individual mandate, were found to be unconstitutional by the United State?s Supreme Court.

How much will health insurance cost with a Mandate?

In their analysis they found that if the mandate remains as part of the legislation, the average price people would pay in the ?Total Nongroup? health insurance market would be $5,100 per year and $425 per month ($58 less than the CBO estimate).

Assuming the mandate stays in place, the report also breaks out costs by how much people would pay for insurance if they buy it through an exchange ($5,200) versus what they would pay outside of an exchange ($4,900).

How much will health insurance cost without a Mandate?

In their analysis they found that if the mandate is eliminated from the legislation, but a large percentage of the population buys health insurance and uses health insurance exchanges, the average price people would pay in the ?Total Nongroup? health insurance market would be $5,600 per year and $467 per month ($16 less than the CBO estimate).

Assuming the mandate goes away, the report also breaks out costs by how much people would pay for insurance if they buy it through an exchange ($5,700/ year vs. $475/month) versus what they would pay outside of an exchange ($5,100 year vs. $425/month).

Notes

These numbers may seem off if they?re more or less than what you?re paying for some Medicare plans or non-group health insurance plans. AARP benefits, ? AARP health insurance plans or Medicare Supplement plans, for example. But it?s important to note that these reports do not address Medicare costs.

They?re more applicable to someone who has an Aetna?health insurance plan, an Anthem Blue Cross / Blue Shield (BCBS) plan or another reputable insurance company in the non-group health insurance market. But, it?s also important to remember that these costs are national and not broken down for any particular state. So, for example, if you have Blue Cross, Aetna or BCBS plan from California the prices may be very different from what a blue Cross Blue Shield plan in Florida, Georgia or Texas might be.

It is important to get out of your comfort zone as often as possible so that you can meet people on a regular basis. The reason you do this is that a more personal touch is needed if you want to grow your business and take it up a few levels. There are options outside of the phone too, like Skype. Once you?re comfortable with this approach, you can then move ahead and actually arrange face to face meetings with your business networking partners so that you can discuss your plans with them. customized fat loss

Know Whom You Want to Meet: If you?d like a particular person to help you enter his or her network, you first need to know whom you want to meet most. It needs to be absolutely clear to you which types of people you want to be in touch with and who you think will benefit your business the most. This specific aspect is going to help you offer a clear description to the people you already know and who can help you reach the right people in their own networks. This probably seems small now but it?s a big deal in the bigger picture.

In the long run all of the work that you have done to build your business network will have been worth it. You might have to wait a little bit, especially if you are a beginner, to see your business network building efforts pay off but in the long run you will see that the work?if it was consistently paid out?was worth it. Ten Tactics for Saving Money on Pets | Tony and Kris Official Website

Here?s what pet owners have suggested to save money. These may or may not work for you but is something to think about.

Visit a shelter to pick out your pet. Yes, you have to be more selective when visiting a shelter because some of the animals have been mistreated and may not react well to children (or adults). However, if you visit a hand full of shelters, you?ll often find many wonderful pets that will fit your needs well. There are a lot of reasons that pets wind up at shelters, and neglect/abuse is just one of them.

Donate $100 to the shelter. Check out their programs first, but quite often, a $100 donation will ensure that you get a pet that has already had vaccinations and has already been spayed or neutered. These procedures can cost hundreds of dollars if you take your pet in to a vet to have it done later.

Don?t skimp on food. A fifty pound bag of Ol? Roy might be a cheap way to feed the pet, but it will result in long-term health issues that will be expensive to treat. Instead, research what kinds of food are most appropriate for your pet and be willing to spend a little more to get good food. This will help to keep your pet healthier, happier, and active for a lot longer. One of my friends doesn?t even feed her dog traditional ?dog food,? but has studied what raw foods their diet should consist of and feeds the dog those items.

Buy that food in bulk. Once you figure out the best food for your pet, don?t hesitate to buy it in bulk and store it somewhere out of the pet?s reach. Depending on what you choose as the optimum food, you may find it at your local warehouse store or you may find a bulk seller in your area.

Groom the pet yourself. Taking your pet to a pet salon might be an easy way to get the pet clean, but almost everything done there can be done quite quickly at home and a lot cheaper. Don?t be afraid to get your hands dirty and clean your pet yourself.

Know their routine. Pay attention to your pet. If the pet?s routine starts to change, that?s a sign that there?s some sort of medical issue coming down the pipe. If you notice it now, it?s often easy to treat with a dietary change or something else that?s simple. If you wait until it?s disastrous, it can be very expensive.

Hit the library. If you have a new pet, learn about it. Learn what things it needs. Learn about some of the basics of caring for that pet, as well as signs for the most common ailments and how to treat them. Learn how to train your pet in the skills that it will need ? and put in the time to train the pet yourself.

Treat simple things, like fleas, ticks, and heartworm, yourself. This involves understanding your pet?s health (the tips above), but if you?ve actually invested the time to know how to properly care for the pet, then you?ll know what simple ailments you can treat yourself instead of paying a vet to treat. It?s much less expensive to order the treatment yourself than to consult a vet for the most common ailments.

Keep the water bowl full. If you notice the water bowl for your pet is low, fill it, and keep an eye on the bowl throughout the day. Appropriate amounts of water is perhaps the best insurance for a pet?s long term health. The exception to this is when you?re housetraining a puppy, in which case you need to stick to a strict watering schedule. Too much water for a puppy can result in accidents and a big setback in training.

Check Craigslist for supplies. Need a pet carrier, a leash, or a food bowl? People on Craigslist are often selling this stuff for a pittance (and sometimes it?s free on freecycle). When you need reusable supplies like this, heading straight to the store is a sure way to spend more than you probably need to.
The best thing you can do for any pet, however, is to show the pet love. Just like humans, most pets thrive on being loved by others. So, go ahead and give that big, slobbery dog a vigorous petting and stroke the cat until it begins to purr.

FCC Used Regulations to Bankrupt the Competition of Obama ...

More crony capitalism brought to you by President Obama and his cronies. LightSquared is politically-connected to Obama through Obama donor Philip Falcone and George Soros. The FCC delayed a waiver for a LightSquared competitor as they speed up the sale of SkyTerra to Obama donor Philip Falcone and Harbinger, the hedge-fund parent company of LightSquared. It should be noted that Obama was a SkyTerra investor and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is Obama?s Harvard classmate.

I would also like to remind folks that the Obama White House wanted a 4-Star Air Force General to change his testimony in favor of LightSquared and tried to ?guide? the testimony of a Director to hide the effects of LightSquared?s technology had on GPS systems.

Of course, the Obama White House wants the weak-minded to believe this is all just coincidental (wink).

From the DC:

The Daily Caller has obtained?documents, emails and communications showing how President Barack Obama?s Federal Communications Commission demolished wireless?broadband?company LightSquared?s competition through a pattern of regulatory decisions apparently aimed at establishing an ?open-access? Internet in the United States.

The FCC?successfully green-lighted?LightSquared?s corporate formation in 2009 by allowing Wall Street hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners to purchase majority ownership in satellite company SkyTerra. A major obstacle that still remained in LightSquared?s way was competitor GlobalStar.

GlobalStar had a similar operation to the one LightSquared was building at the time. A major difference, though, was GlobalStar?s already-orbiting satellites, and the broadband Internet access it was already providing to Americans in rural areas of the country.

GlobalStar leased terrestrial spectrum to Open Range Communications, a company that provided broadband Internet access to customers in underserved parts of rural America. Open Range?s business model depended on a 2008 loan, worth $264 million, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Rural Utilities Service.

In 2008 the FCC gave GlobalStar a 16-month waiver from so-called ?gating??rules, which required it to guarantee that its satellite service would be continuously available?everywhere it offered?broadband?service, and also required it to maintain spare satellites in case of an urgent need. GlobalStar had said the issues its system faced would be fixed when it could launch 24 new satellites, which it planned to do by July 1, 2010.

The waiver was meant to allow GlobalStar and Open Range to continue building their networks while GlobalStar fixed those issues.?Open Range depended on GlobalStar for its continued operation.

Then, the unthinkable happened: On April 6, 2009 an earthquake struck L?Aquila, Italy,?damaging a factory?that made component parts essential to GlobalStar?s satellites. The factory closed, reopening eight months later in early December 2009.

Citing the earthquake and disruptions because of the global financial meltdown, GlobalStar filed a request with the Obama administration?s FCC on Dec. 14, 2009,?asking for an additional temporary waiver from the agency?s requirements so it could continue building its network.

The FCC didn?t acknowledge receipt of the extension request until March 5, 2010, and didn?t open it up for public notice until four weeks later, on April 2.

During the months while GlobalStar?s request languished in the FCC?s slow-moving bureaucracy, the agency was helping to finalize the sale of SkyTerra to Harbinger. That company would ultimately become LightSquared.

On Feb. 26, 2010,?one week before the FCC acknowledged GlobalStar?s request, Harbinger and the FCC agreed on conditions that would forbid LightSquared from selling to Verizon and AT&T any?spectrum it would later acquire.

Dozens of homes damaged in Georgia tornado

A twister has touched down in northwest Georgia, damaging up to 100 homes. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By msnbc.com staff

Dozens of homes were damaged in a tornado near Rome, Ga., Wednesday night, knocking out power and forcing schools to close, local media reported, citing authorities.

Floyd County Emergency Management Agency director Scotty Hancock said up to 100 homes suffered damage, NBC station 11alive.com reported. The storm uprooted trees and knocked down power lines across the county.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the storm was an EF1 tornado. Hancock said a NWS team was conducting a damage survey, the station reported.

Police said a woman in her 70s was believed to have suffered a heart attack when her home was damaged, the Atlanta Constitution Journal reported. The woman's cousins told 11alive.com that as trees began falling around her home, she began having chest pains. She called 911, but the ambulance had trouble getting to her house in the storm. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Jimmy Kimmel Asks: Have You Ever Flashed Someone?

Can you tell if a woman has ever flashed someone just by looking at her?

Not a question we pondered before today, admittedly, but Jimmy Kimmel got us thinking about it. The late night host interviewed people on the street and asked them that very question, then polled the audience to see if they could guess right.

The results were mixed in terms of accuracy, but all pretty funny:

Celebrity Love Mistakes to AvoidCupid's Pulse: Celebrity Gossip ...

Cupid's Pulse, celebrity couples, relationships, love, mistakes, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, LeAnn Rimes, Tori Spelling, Elizabeth Taylor, Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian

Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart. Photo: AceShowbiz.com

By Abiola Abrams

Some of us view Hollywood stars as lifestyle role models. ?You want Sofia Vergara?s lipstick, Beyonce?s curly hair or the Balenciaga bag that everybody and their mother was rocking on the red carpet recently. ?While it?s cool to mix celeb style with your own once in a while, it?s important to remember that the people who entertain us with movies, TV and music are just that ? people.

That said, the famous are more human than we realize, and some of our favorite celebrities have one thing in common that we should never seek to emulate ? their tumultuous relationships. ?In fact, let?s learn from the love, sex and dating mistakes of the stars.

Here are some celebrity relationship snafus to avoid:

Love Mistake: Never Being Single.

It seemed like Jennifer Lopez was barely divorced from her crooner hubby Marc Anthony before stepping out with sexy back up dancer Casper Smart. ?Before that, she made a seamless transition from her Bennifer engagement to her JenAnthony marriage. ?What?s up with that?

Going from relationship to relationship is a mistake. ?Taking a break between longtime loves is the best way to heal and ensure that we come to the next marriage or engagement as whole human beings.

Related: 10 Love Lessons from Bruce Springsteen

Love Mistake: Marrying too soon.

Kim Kardashian and what?s-his-face Humphries had the 72-day fairytale heard ?round the world. ?It seemed like Kimmie was set to continue the Dash girls tradition of meeting and immediately ending up happily ever after. ?Look at her little sister Khloe and her b-baller Lamar Odom. ?Their less than one month courtship has yielded a relationship that?s still going strong.

Bottom line? ?Khloe and Lamar are a wonderful fluke. ?Marrying someone before you?ve even had the ?where will we live? conversation is a huge mistake. ?Sorry, Kris Humphries!

Related:?Kim Kardashian?s Divorce ? A Reminder About Relationship Mistakes to Avoid

Love Mistake: Stealing someone else?s lover.

Man and woman stealing is a time honored Hollywood tradition. ?See LeAnn Rimes, Tori Spelling, Angelina Jolie and even old school movie star Elizabeth Taylor. ?It?s a big world out there. ?If your love cheated to be with you, then how can you ever trust that this pattern won?t be repeated? ?The answer is, you can?t.

Karma is a mean goddess, and hell hath no fury like karma scorned. ?Just sayin.?

Love Mistake: Getting a mistress pregnant.

Arnold Schwarzenegger sure did seem preachy about family values as the Republican governor of California, didn?t he? ?Little did we know that the Governator was not only sleeping with the maid, but he?d had a love child with her as well. ?Oy vey.

Obviously, this is a relationship no-no to be avoided at all costs.

Love Mistake: Bashing your ex.

When we watched Kelsey Grammer?s previous wife Camille Grammer battle the divorce demon on ?The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,? our hearts broke for her. ?Her A-list husband cheated and ran. ?Sure, she had choice words about him on her reality show, but then Mr. Grammer behaved deplorably by bashing his former Mrs. in an interview with Pierce Brosnan.

A smarter move is always to take the high road. ?See?Jennifer Aniston for lessons on grace under fire. ?Okay, it didn?t work out, and she moved on. ?Sure, it?s probably messy. ?Life is a contact sport.

What are some other celeb love snafus? ?Dating different versions of the same jerk a la Halle Berry, returning to the scene of the crime like Rihanna?or?falling apart after a breakup like Demi Moore?are all examples not?to follow.

Ah, le love. ?You?re much better off copying a celebrity hair cut than imitating their love styles. ?Here?s to shiny, happy and healthy relationships!

(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, Pool)

(AP) ? The United States and Mexico agreed Monday to work together when drilling for oil and gas below their maritime border in the Gulf of Mexico.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mexico's foreign minister signed the deal at a ceremony in the Mexican resort of Los Cabos as Mexican President Felipe Calderon and U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar looked on.

The cooperation stems from an understanding that President Barack Obama and Calderon reached in 2010 to share in the profits and work together to avoid spills.

Clinton said the deal would "ensure safe, efficient, responsible exploration of the oil and gas reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico."

"These reservoirs could hold considerable reserves that would benefit the United States and Mexico alike," she said.

But they don't necessarily stop neatly at our maritime boundary," Clinton added. "This could lead to disputes if a company discovers a reservoir that straddles the boundary ? disputes, for example, over who should do the extraction and how much they should extract."

Clinton said the agreement will prevent such disputes and create new business opportunities.

Calderon said the deal creates clear rules and should erase any fear among Mexicans that their oil will be appropriated by Americans.

And he stressed that "operations will be done in a safe and responsible manner, with full respect to the environment."

Under the agreement, U.S. companies will now be allowed to partner with Mexico's national oil company in drilling. But neither country is constrained by the other.

If the two governments can't agree on how to exploit a reservoir, either can take its share unilaterally.

The U.S. Interior Department said the agreement makes nearly 1.5 million acres of the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf more accessible for exploration and production activities.

The area could contain 172 million barrels of oil and 304 billion cubic feet of natural gas, it said.

"This is an area larger than the state of Delaware," Salazar said.

South African soprano Elizabeth Connell dies at 65

(AP) ? South African-born opera singer Elizabeth Connell, who won global acclaim in roles by Wagner, Strauss, Beethoven and others, has died. She was 65.

Connell's management company, Helmut Fischer Artists International, said Monday that the singer died of cancer Feb. 18 in London.

Born in Port Elizabeth in 1946, Connell moved to London in 1970 and made her debut at Ireland's Wexford Festival in 1972.

She had a long association with both Opera Australia and the English National Opera, and performed at the world's major opera houses, including Germany's Bayreuth festival, la Scala in Milan and New York's Metropolitan Opera, where she performed 12 times between 1985 and 1991.

She was singing Lady Macbeth in Verdi's "Macbeth" at the Met on Jan. 23, 1988, when a member of the audience leapt to his death from a balcony during the second intermission, cutting short a live radio broadcast of the performance.

Connell began her career as a mezzo-soprano, with notable Wagnerian roles including Ortrud in "Lohengrin" and Brangaene in "Tristan und Isolde."

Later she became a dramatic soprano, tackling roles including Fiordiligi in Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte," Leonore in Beethoven's "Fidelio" and Ariadne in Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos."

In 2008, she was hailed for her performance in the title role of Puccini's "Turandot" at the Royal Opera House; the Guardian's George Hall praised the 62-year-old performer for "cutting through the dense orchestral textures like a scythe through porridge."

She went on to perform the role in Sydney, Hamburg and Prague.

Connell's last performance was at a concert in the English town of Hastings in November. Her finale was a song by Ernest Charles that begins: "When I have sung my songs to you, I'll sing no more."

Connell is survived by several siblings. A memorial service is due to be held Saturday near her home in Richmond, southwest London.
