More than ever, Barca more than club for Catalans

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Nearly 20 minutes into the latest clash between Spain's most popular football teams, Barcelona's 98,000-seat Camp Nou stadium erupted into a deafening roar. Tens of thousands of Catalans in the city at the heart of their separatist movement chanted in unison: "Independence!"

More than ever, FC Barcelona, known affectionately as Barca, is living up to its motto of being "more than a club" for this wealthy northeastern region where Spain's economic crisis is fueling separatist sentiment.

Lifelong Barca club member Enric Pujol was at Camp Nou for this month's game against Real Madrid, the team of Spain's capital. Wearing his burgundy-and-blue Barca jersey, Pujol also held one of the hundreds of pro-independence "estelada" flags, featuring a white star in a blue triangle, which bristled throughout the stands.

"It was a beautiful emotion to see Camp Nou like that," said Pujol. "Barca is more than a club because of the values it transmits. It is linked to Catalan culture. In this sense it is a club and a social institution that acts like our flag."

Barca has been seen as a bastion of Catalan identity dating back to the three decades of dictatorship when Catalans could not openly speak, teach or publish in their native Catalan language. Barcelona writer Manuel Vazquez Montalban famously called the football team "Catalonia's unarmed symbolic army."

Barca-Real Madrid matches have a nickname: "el clasico" ? the classic ? and they are one of the world's most-watched sporting events, seen by 400 million people in 30 countries. But local passions run high. In Spain, where football has deep political and cultural connotations, many see the clashes of Spain's most successful teams as a proxy battle between wealthy Catalonia and the central government in Madrid. If Barca is a symbol of Catalan nationalism, Real Madrid is an emblem of a unified Spain.

"Look, the truth is that ever since the Civil War there has always been tension in Spain," said Pujol. "Having traveled in Spain, they always look at us as Catalans."

Ahead of kickoff before any "clasico," Camp Nou traditionally greets Real Madrid players with a huge mosaic of Barcelona's burgundy-and-blue stripes made up of colored cards. This year, for the first time, they held up cards forming the red-and-yellow striped Catalan "senyera" flag ? an explicit nationalist message. (Barca says it can neither confirm nor deny reports that its away uniform next season will be modeled on the senyera.)

Then came the crowd's collective shout for independence at 1714 hours ? in reference to the year 1714 when Barcelona fell to the troops of Philip V in the War of Spanish Succession. It was organized by a pro-independence group through social media.

Barca fan David Fort sees his team as a vehicle to show the world that Catalonia has its own language and culture, which is distinct from what he called the "bulls and flamenco" associated with Spain.

"We have this love for Barca because we have the chance to be represented around the world," said Fort, a 38-year-old architect from the southern Catalan town of Tarragona. "When we travel and they ask me if I am Spanish, I say not exactly, but when I mention Barca they say 'Ah! The Catalan team', and of course since they are champions you feel proud."

Barca, like every institution in Spain, was marked by the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s and resulting right-wing dictatorship that ended after Franco's death in 1975.

Franco's soldiers killed Barca's club president in 1936, and the club was forced to change its name from a Catalan to a Spanish version. And while Real Madrid was identified with the regime, Barca, for many, came to represent Catalan anti-fascist resistance.

"Under Franco, people could not shout 'Long Live Catalonia!,' but they could shout 'Long Live Barca!' (?Visca Barca!)" in Catalan, said Ernest Folch, a newspaper columnist who writes about Barca for El Periodico. The chant became a kind of code for expressing Catalan pride.

"Barca is an anomaly. There is no other club with its particular history," said Folch. "It survived the Franco dictatorship, and has always been a focal point for protest and ferment where sport has mixed with politics."

And politics is a very hot topic these days in Catalonia.

Voters will go to the polls on Nov. 25 in regional elections sure to be judged as a litmus test of the strength of the pro-independence movement that brought 1.5 million people to the streets of Barcelona on Sept. 11 in the largest rally since the 1970s.

Catalonia is heavily in debt and has in fact asked Spain for a euros 5.9 billion ($75 billion) bailout. Even so, regional lawmakers voted on Sept. 27 to hold a referendum on self-determination at a date still to be determined. And although it is still unclear that a "Yes" vote would win, Spain's central government has called such a referendum unconstitutional and will surely try to stop it from taking place.

That all puts Catalonia, and therefore Barca, in the midst of Spain's struggles to deal with consequences of back-to-back recessions, 25 percent unemployment, and high public debt that has drawn it into the euro crisis along with already bailed-out Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Barca's appeal, of course, transcends its regional identity. The team is beloved throughout the world, and a poll last year found that it had displaced Real Madrid as Spain's most popular team. Barca has 546 fan clubs in Catalonia, and 841 in the rest of Spain. Some of these fans? even in Catalonia ? disagree with what they perceive as the political turn the club has taken in recent years.

"It's surreal to talk about these ideas related to independence," said fan Jamie Easton, 27, a Spaniard born in Barcelona to a British father and a mother of Catalan descent. "Barca is a Catalan and Spanish club because Barcelona is part of Spain, and fans can feel however they want."

The upswing in separatist sentiment in Catalonia has forced both the club and its players? many of whom form the backbone of Spain's world champion national team ? to try a difficult balancing act between supporting their most fervent pro-independence fans without alienating the millions of others who are not.

"We are Barca. We represent Catalonia and we will support whatever Catalans want," said Barca and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez. But he added: "We try to isolate ourselves from everything outside the game. We know the political issue is there, and the people have the right to express themselves however they wish, but we are here to play football and make sure people have fun."

The glaring exception to the moderate tone is former coach Pep Guardiola, a hugely popular figure in Catalonia, who appeared in a video during the Sept. 11 march saying: "Here you have my vote for independence."

Two weeks after the politically charged "clasico," Barca president Sandro Rosell made his first official visit to southern Spain to cool tensions at a meeting of Barca fan clubs.

"I don't know what information you are receiving here, but I preferred to come here and say on behalf of the club that Barca will never get mixed up in political issues," Rosell told the 1,000 Spanish fans, promising that Barca would never display a mosaic of the separatist "estelada" flag at Camp Nou.

"This doesn't mean that this isn't a Catalan club and that of course we will defend our roots and origins, but one thing shouldn't be mixed with the other. One thing is politics and the other is identity. Barca unites us all."

Open webOS-powered HDTVs said to be on the way from... LG?

If you were wondering what was next for webOS now that it's gone all open source on us, webOS Nation chimes in with word that Gram is working with LG to bring it to connected HDTVs. Several names from the HP / Gram team are dropped as being involved in the effort, which reportedly was under way even before HP revealed it would spin the project off as an independent. Of course, when we actually saw Open webOS 1.0 it was already stretching to fill the space of an HP TouchSmart computer screen (project architect Steve Winston specifically mentioned hotel kiosks as a possibility, a market LG is all over) so it makes sense that larger displays have been a target. With LG supposedly both looking to replace its existing NetCast smart TV platform and unhappy with Google TV based on its rate of adoption and Google's terms, engineers have been working to port the software to its dual-core L9 chipset. In the past LG has pursued voice and motion control, the aforementioned Google TV integration and even Plex support to make its smart TVs more appealing, and has founded the Smart TV Alliance for cross platform apps. We only have to wait until CES 2013 to see if webOS is next up to power its efforts, stay tuned.

Mobile revenues start to flow for Facebook

Facebook's revenue has risen to $1.26 billion for the third quarter of the year - a rise of 32%.

The social networking site beat market expectations and has recorded growth in selling advertising on mobile phones. Zuckerberg revealed that the company was now taking 14% of its advertising revenue from mobile after only six months after introducing advertisements on the platform.

Facebook has had a troubled few months since its stock market flotation in May which has seen the share price halve. Investor sentiment has been pessimistic due to expectations of how users would access services with industry experts saying Facebook would not be able to sustain revenues on mobile to the same extent they could on a desktop platform.

Mark Zuckerberg commented: "I want to dispel the myth that Facebook can't make money from mobile. It gives us the opportunity to reach more people because in the coming years there will be billions more smartphones than desktops."

Deputies respond to a call at the home just over the state line in Fayetteville, Tenn., Monday, Oct. 22, 2012. The slayings of three women and a toddler at two homes in southern Tennessee may be related to a body found just across the state line in Alabama, authorities said Tuesday. On Monday, Tennessee officials found three women and an 18-month-old boy dead at two different homes in Lincoln County, about 100 miles south of Nashville. (AP Photo/The Huntsville Times, Sarah Cole)

(AP) ? The recent homicides of six people along the Tennessee-Alabama state line have brought back fear and bad memories of previous violent slayings near the quiet rural town of Fayetteville, Tenn.

Dozens of law enforcement personnel in Tennessee and Alabama have been working long hours over the past three days to identify a suspect in the deaths of three women and a toddler near Fayetteville and the deaths of two men in Alabama. The bodies of the women and child were found Monday. The bodies of the men were found the following day.

The killings come just three years after six people, including a family in Tennessee and a man in Alabama, were slain near the same border town.

For Lincoln County Sheriff Murray Blackwelder, this is his second multiple-homicide case in a six-year career. The recurrence so soon of such violence has taken a toll on everyone in the county, from police officers to the families who live there, he said.

"It shakes the community," he said. "It shakes it to its core and I understand people being nervous. I understand people being scared because of the unknown."

Authorities on Monday found the bodies of 22-year-old Chabreya Campbell, her 18-month-old son, Rico Ragland, and her friend, 21-year-old Amber McCaulley of Huntsville, Ala., in a home near Fayetteville. Campbell was six months pregnant. A 3-year-old boy was unharmed.

Hours later, police found 21-year-old Jessica Brown's body in a house elsewhere in the county. A 2-month-old infant in the house was not hurt.

Investigators started looking for 24-year-old Warren Vincent Crutcher as a person of interest in the case, but he was found dead Tuesday, his body dumped in some Alabama woods just across the state line. A sixth victim, identified as Jeffrey Pope, was found dead the same day in his Huntsville, Ala., home. The common thread in all three cases: Crutcher knew the other victims.

As investigators try to unravel the case, some in the community can't help but be reminded of the July 2009 killings. Like the events of that year, the latest crimes have left them in shock.

In the 2009 case, sheriff's deputies found 38-year-old Traci Shaffer, her son, Devin Brooks, and neighbor Robert Berber, both 16, dead in their home. The bodies of Traci Shaffer's brother, Chris Hall, 34, and father Billy Hall, 57, were found in a home across the road.

Jacob Shaffer and his unharmed 4-year-old daughter were found by authorities sitting on the porch of one of the homes where the bodies were found. Authorities then found 50-year-old Sidney Wade Dempsey beaten to death at a business in Huntsville, Ala., about 30 miles south.

Shaffer pleaded guilty to five counts of murder in the Tennessee slayings and was given five life sentences. He has not yet gone to trial in Dempsey's slaying.

Sheila Brannon, 50, has lived in Fayetteville her whole life and works just over the state line in Alabama at a fast food restaurant not far from where one of the bodies was found this week. Brannon said she immediately thought back to the Shaffer family.

"I never expected it to happen here again," she said, while standing outside the Fayetteville courthouse in the town's bustling downtown square.

She said the latest slayings have made her skittish and fearful, and she doesn't understand why anyone would kill a child.

"I thought it was sick. It's horrible," she said. "It's not like the baby could talk."

Blackwelder said there are similarities between this year's case and the 2009 killings.

While he said he couldn't go into detail, in both instances, family members and acquaintances were targeted, some children were killed while others were left unscathed, and the crime scenes were in both Tennessee and Alabama, miles apart.

Blackwelder said the intensity of the police work necessary to bring the Shaffer case to trial has been difficult on his deputies and staff.

"Unfortunately we have the distinction of having two multiple homicides and it takes a huge toll on the personnel," he said. "It takes a toll on their personal lives and it takes a toll on the resources that we have."

He said the investigators are working just as diligently as they did three years again to solve the latest killings. And he tried to assure residents that they shouldn't be afraid.

"I don't feel like the residents of Lincoln or Madison counties, either one, should be concerned with their safety, because this was not a random act," he said.

What would you pay for an iPad Mini?

Apple is expected to introduce a smaller iPad on Tuesday. How much will it cost?

By Peter Svensson,?AP Technology Writer / October 23, 2012

Passersby outside an Apple store in Hong Kong. Apple is expected to soon unveil a device called an iPad Mini.

Those who follow Apple believe they have figured out most of the particulars of a smaller?iPad?expected to be revealed on Tuesday. One big question remains, though: What will it cost?

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Apple hasn't said anything about the device, but the veil of secrecy it throws over unreleased products has been a see-through affair this year. Most of the details of the iPhone 5 were known well in advance of its launch a month ago.

In the case of the "iPad?Mini" (the real name is not known), tech bloggers and analysts expect a device with a screen measuring 7.85 inches (19.9 centimeters) on the diagonal, making it about half the size of the regular?iPad. It would be slightly larger than the 7-inch (17.5-centimeter) tablets it's presumably designed to compete with, including Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire and Google Inc.'s Nexus 7.

The Kindle Fire starts at $159, and the Nexus 7 at $199. Meanwhile, Apple sells the?iPad?2 for $399 and the 4-inch iPod Touch for $199. Company watchers are pegging the price of the smaller?iPad?somewhere in between.

Most of the guesses range from $249 to $299, but the blog 9to5Mac said Monday that the price would be $329. That would make the?iPad?Mini twice the price of the cheapest Kindle Fire and leave plenty of room for other manufacturers to snap up value shoppers this holiday season. The blog did not disclose its source and has had a mixed record in predicting details on unreleased Apple products.

Analysts such as Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets believe that Apple will also sell a step-up version of the?iPad?Mini, one with the ability to access 4G cellular networks for an additional monthly fee. That's a feature the cheaper, 7-inch tablets don't have.

Apple is holding the presentation at a theater in San Jose, California, starting at 10 a.m. PDT (1700 GMT). The company typically starts selling a new phone or?iPad?a week or two after announcing it. But it could treat the new?iPad?as a minor product update, in which case it could start selling it right after the announcement.

Apple has sold 84 million?iPads?since their debut in April 2010. One of the first competitors to appear was a Samsung tablet with a 7-inch screen. Apple's late founder, Steve Jobs, made a rare appearance at an October 2010 conference call with analysts ? his last ? to deride the concept.

"The reason we wouldn't make a 7-inch tablet isn't because we don't want to hit a price point. It's because we don't think you can make a great tablet with a 7-inch screen," Jobs said. "The 7-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an?iPad."

He said the resolution of the display could be increased to make up for the smaller size, but that would be "meaningless, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of the present size."

"There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch (25-centimeter) screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps," he said.

Jobs didn't mention that Apple has had great success developing software that used taps, flicks and pinches on the iPhone, with a screen one quarter of the size he was attacking.

Jobs, who died last October, had strong opinions, but he also changed his mind frequently. The production of a smaller?iPad?would not be the first time Apple has made a product that Jobs initially dismissed as ridiculous.

In an internal email sent in January 2011, Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue said that a 7-inch tablet would work well and that Jobs was starting to come around to the idea. The email surfaced as part of Apple's patent trial against Samsung Electronics Co. this year.

Apart from the smaller?iPad, Apple is also expected to refresh some other products. There's speculation that the MacBook will come in a version with a 13-inch, high-resolution "Retina" screen. The 15-inch (37.5-centimeter) MacBook got an option for a Retina screen this summer.

Amphibious ATV Sets Sail | Engineering On The Edge

Move over flying cars?you?ve just been replaced on my Christmas list by an ATV that turns into a jetski.

I?m talking about the Quadski from Gibbs Sports Amphibians. The vehicle can reach speeds of 45 mph on both land and water, and can transform from one mode to the other in seconds, the company says. It?s bigger than a standard ATV and jetski at around 1,300 lbs., and boasts a 175hp BMW engine and 15-gallon fuel tank. Cost: Around $40,000.

You can read more about the engine and wheel retracting system here.

Gibbs also developed an amphibious car called the Aquada, which Richard Branson used to cross the English Channel in 2004. Unfortunately, regulators in the U.S. put the kibosh on the vehicle?s introduction here because it could not meet safety and emissions standards on both land and water.

Of course, we?re still big fans of the original German Amphicar.

You can see a video of the Quadski in action below:

5 Lies People Who Pay For Sex Tell Themselves | World of ...

This guest article from YourTango was written by Teresa Maples.

A recent study published by Christine Milrod and co-author Ronald Weitzer analyzes 2,442 postings written by people who pay for sex on an online discussion board that reviews sex providers and their services. Approximately one-third of the posts discussed emotional intimacy between?sex workers?and their clients.

Many of the people who paid for sex expressed a desire to grow their relationships beyond the sex act and develop feelings and mutual love with the person. So what kinds of things do people who pay for sex tell themselves?

5 Ways People Who Pay For Sex Lie To Themselves

1. ?I?m not doing anything wrong.??

The responders make excuses and do not obey the law. These comments were posted by people who are paying for sex. These people are a sub group of the population who are engaging in illegal activity. From a societal view, those who act outside the norms and rules of the society are not the norm for the culture.

Those who engage in paying for sex are breaking the law. Many of the people who engage in prostitution are also involved in a primary relationship like marriage or are living together. Usually, there is a social contract between the two people to be there for each other. In paying for sex, they are breaking this contract as well. In many ways, they are committing relational violence in their primary relationship. 22 Ways Couples Can Overcome Infidelity

2. ?This could turn into a real relationship.??

The responders think they are getting a real relationship,?but they are really seeking instant gratification. In one survey, 32% of customers arrested for soliciting a?prostitute?said they bought sex because they ?didn?t have time? for a conventional relationship. 28% did not want ?the responsibilities? of a relationship, and 18% said they would ?rather have sex with a prostitute than have a conventional relationship with a woman.?

In other words, 78% of the people paying for sex did not want to bother with a ?real? relationship and would rather pay for sex.? An unspoken message here is that the transaction between the sex worker and the client is about money and control. The client is paying to have sex acts done to him, which help feed his fantasies. He gets to call the shots. The sex worker is providing a service to get paid.

3. ?I just do it for the thrill.??

The responders say they are seeking the thrill, but they may be setting themselves up for a full blown sexual addiction. Biologically, people who seek intensity and thrill by engaging in a sex acts are programming their brains to seek greater and greater thrills to get the same effect. The engagement of risky behavior leads to more risky behavior. Many of the responders might experience anxiety and withdrawal symptoms if they chose to stop paying for sex. 7 Signs Your Partner Is A Sex Addict

4. ?I think I might love them.??

But really, the responders could be acting out their fantasies.?They could be?imagining they have a ?feelings of love? for the sex worker. Even in ?real? relationships there is an aspect of projecting what you want onto the other person. It makes sense that someone who pays a ?repeat? sex worker could imagine he has a ?real relationship? with her. I wonder what would happen if he stopped paying?

5. ?I derserve it.??

The responders have a sense of entitlement. In other words they are saying, ?I want sex a certain way and I deserve to get it.??While we are pre-programmed by design as humans to propagate the earth, similar to animals. We also have the ability to think and feel. Yes someone can pay for sex and feel momentarily satisfied; however, in my opinion they are depriving themselves the joy of true authentic?emotional connection?with a real person based on mutuality for the long term.

If you have paid sex workers and have tried to stop and keep going back to it, seek professional help. You can overcome this behavior. There is a way out. You can click on any of the links to contact?Sex Addicts Anonymous(SAA),?Sexaholics Anonymous(SA),?Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous(SLAA),?Prodigals, Inc.,?PureDesire,?SexHelp.com?or?myself?for help.

How do you get love and emotional intimacy?

It all begins with a commitment to being the healthiest you can be, from the inside out. Learn to love all the parts of yourself even the places that hurt or feel shameful. Healthy sexuality between two people, involves vulnerability and safety in the relationship. Both partners are attached to one another physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

This model of relationship mutually benefits each partner. It takes work and time to develop emotional intimacy, and it also requires delayed gratification. By learning how to be a safe person emotionally with a chosen safe person, you can develop a more complex positive response system that is stable and sustainable over time. Choose wisely.
