How to make your iPhone password stronger

18 hrs.

We've?talked before?about using a longer passcode on your iPhone instead of a 4-digit pin, but as the tech blog Digital Inspiration points out, adding in accented characters adds yet another level of security.

The idea is that most people aren't going to bother dealing with accented characters (if you hold down on a letter, the available accented characters show up) when they're trying to guess your password. To use these, you first have to turn on the alphanumeric passcode. Just head into Settings > General > Passcode Lock, and turn off Simple Passcode. You'll be asked to enter in a new password, so throw in a few accented characters. It might make it a bit of a pain to enter in your passcode, but at least it's more secure.

Bolshoi Ballet acid victim: I forgive my attacker

By Steve Gutterman, Reuters

An April 2011 photo shows Sergei Filin, artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, as he looked before an attacker threw acid in his face in Moscow on Friday.

MOSCOW -- The artistic director of Russia's Bolshoi Ballet says he has forgiven the attacker who splashed acid in his face and has pledged to return to the stage.

His head shaven and a bandage around his neck, Sergei Filin told a Russian television station from his hospital room that he was determined to return to work despite his injuries.

Filin, 42, suffered severe burns during the attack on his way home from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow late on Jan. 18. Doctors have performed two operations on each eye and hope to save his sight.

"I am not going to lie. Of course it is very hard for me and very difficult," Filin said in grainy footage in a video-link with NTV television late on Sunday.

"I tell myself every morning when I wake up: 'Sergei, you are healthy, everything is in its place -- your arms, your legs.' ... And I will do everything to go back to being the same Sergei I was before."

Filin did not wear the thick bandages that had swathed his head and face in mobile phone footage taken the day after the attack, but his eyes were half-closed and it was unclear whether he could see.

Filin's job gave him the power to make or break careers at the ballet, which is an enduring symbol of Russian culture. He said after the attack that he had been receiving threats.

"A priest came to me, and I told him: 'You know, I forgive everyone, and God will be their judge. Because people are weak,'" he said. "I forgive all the people who are involved in this."

He said he did not know who was behind the attack but made clear he believed that it was related to his work.

"Before somehow satisfying their ambitions or quenching the pain of resentment ... it would be truly good if they would just think about the fact that I have three remarkable sons," Filin said.

"Even if the worst happens, I will continue to look upon this world, and I will continue to do what I do -- but it will be through the eyes of my three sons."

Russia's top eye doctor told Reuters last week that Filin would retain at least some vision in each eye.

"I promise, you will see me on stage," Filin said.

Social Security and Medicare: Do you get back what you pay in?

People who pay into Social Security and Medicare their whole working lives are often told by politicians that they've 'earned' these retirement benefits. Here's why that's not necessarily so.

The question arises because earlier this week House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R) of Wisconsin said they are. Appearing on Laura Ingraham?s radio show on Jan. 22, Representative Ryan said President Obama had mischaracterized the GOP?s attitude toward the nation?s big social insurance programs.

?No one is suggesting that what we call our earned entitlements ? entitlements you pay for, like payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security ? are putting you in a ?taker? category,? said Ryan. ?No one would suggest that whatsoever.?

Of course, Ryan is far from the only politician to describe Social Security and Medicare in this manner. The wording may be more common among Democrats, who often imply that these programs are simply keeping folks? tax cash warm until they need it ? so hands off!

Let?s quote Mr. Obama himself from an appearance last September before an American Association of Retired Persons audience: ?I want to emphasize, Medicare and Social Security are not handouts. You?ve paid into these programs your whole lives. You?ve earned them.?

To this we say, weelllll, not really. The situation is more complicated than that.

It?s true that workers fork over Social Security and Medicare taxes every payday. But under current law, over their lifetimes most Americans will get back substantially more from these programs then they?ve paid in, even after accounting for inflation and adjusting for interest you might have earned if you?d kept the money.

That?s primarily due to the rising value of projected Medicare health benefits. Social Security is a different story. In recent years the raising of the Social Security retirement age, plus other tweaks, have made the big retirement income entitlement less generous. New retirees won?t get back quite as much income support as they?ve contributed in Social Security taxes.

However, individual tax/benefit ratios for both programs are highly variable, depending on lifetime earnings, longevity, marital status, and health conditions.

Got all that? We weren?t kidding when we said it was ?complicated.?

Reader sue Armstrong over drug-use denial in books

(AP Photo/Peter Dejong, File)

(AP) ? An aide to former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was so taken by Lance Armstrong's first memoir of battling back from cancer to win the Tour de France multiple times that he immediately read it "cover to cover" and recommended it to several friends.

Now he wants his money back ? and then some.

Rob Stutzman and several others who bought Armstrong's "It's Not About The Bike" and "Every Second Counts" have filed a lawsuit in Sacramento federal court. It alleges Armstrong duped them into believing the books were inspirational true accounts of the cyclist's accomplishments done without performance-enhancing drugs.

The lawsuit accuses Armstrong and the books' publishers of committing fraud, false advertising and other wrongdoing for publishing the cyclist's vehement denials that he wasn't a cheat.

Armstrong admitted to cheating throughout his career in a televised interview last week. His lawyer Tim Herman didn't immediately respond to inquiries for comment Thursday.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of all readers who felt misled by Armstrong's denials of drug use in "It's Not About The Bike," published in 2000, and "Every Second Counts," published three years later.

"Although Stutzman does not buy or read many books, he found Armstrong's book incredibly compelling and recommended the book to several friends," the lawsuit stated.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday says Stutzman met Armstrong when the cyclist visited with Schwarzenegger.

"At that time, Stutzman thanked Defendant Armstrong for writing his book and told him it was very inspiring and that he had recommended it to friends who were fighting cancer," the suit says. "In response, Armstrong thanked Stutzman."

At least two authors have faced similar lawsuits when their supposed works of nonfiction were alleged to contain fabrications.

James Frey, author of "A Million Little Pieces," and his publisher settled a class-action lawsuit in 2006 alleging he made up parts of his best-selling memoir by offering to refund the cost of the book.

In April, a federal judge in Montana tossed out a lawsuit alleging fraud filed against "Three Cups of Tea" author Greg Mortenson as imprecise, flimsy and speculative.

Timeline: North Korea's brushes with international community

(Reuters) - Here is a look at North Korea's recent brushes with the International community as it announced further rocket launches and a nuclear test that would target the United States: [ID:nL4N0AT22D]

April 5, 2009 - North Korea launches missile carrying a satellite over the Sea of Japan. The test fails to make orbit, but prompts unanimous condemnation by the U.N. Security Council as a violation of sanctions barring the use of ballistic missile technology. Nine days later, North Korea condemns the U.N. Security Council statement and withdraws from the "Six Party Talks" on its nuclear program. It also announces its intention to reactivate its nuclear facilities.

May 25, 2009 - North Korea announces a new test of a nuclear explosive device, its first since October 2006. The next month U.N. Security Council unanimously adopts expanded sanctions on Pyongyang.

July 3-4, 2009 - North Korea fires a series of short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan. Additional missile tests take place in October.

December 8, 2009 - U.S. North Korea envoy Stephen Bosworth begins three-day visit to Pyongyang in first direct high-level contact between North Korea and the U.S. Obama administration. Talks are inconclusive.

October 24-25, 2011 - The United States and North Korea hold two days of talks in Geneva on the nuclear issue. Bosworth is succeeded by new U.S. envoy for North Korea, veteran negotiator Glyn Davies. The United States describes the tone as "positive and generally constructive".

February 29, 2012 - The United States and North Korea announce a "Leap Day" deal under which Pyongyang agrees to suspend major elements of its atomic program and the United States pledges to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid.

March 16, 2012 - North Korea announces plans to launch a satellite to commemorate the centenary of the birth of its founder, Kim Il-sung. The United States and its allies condemn the launch plan as a test of banned ballistic missile technology that could scuttle the "Leap Day" deal. The United States later announces it has suspended plans to provide food aid to the North.

April 13, 2012 - In an embarrassing failure, North Korea admits its heralded launch has failed after the rocket crashes into the sea. Days later, North Korea dismisses a rebuke by the U.N. Security Council and says it is no longer bound by an agreement with the United States for a moratorium on missile and nuclear tests and arms inspection.

December 12, 2012 - North Korea successfully launches a rocket which puts a weather satellite into orbit. It was labeled by the United States, South Korea and Japan as a test of technology that could one day deliver a nuclear warhead capable of hitting targets as far away as the United States.

Jan 23, 2013 - The UN Security Council condemns the launch and tightens existing U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang. North Korea announces it will carry out a third "high-level nuclear test". (Reporting by David Cutler, London Editorial Reference Unit and Andrew Quinn, Editing by Ron Popeski)

Bluetooth Comes of Age

To this day, the name Bluetooth brings back bad memories of the wireless cell phone earpiece that was more personal statement than practical tool. It seemed as if every small-time baller had to show he was successful enough to own one and in demand enough to keep it on him all the time, even when out to dinner with his girlfriend?s parents.

But Bluetooth has come of age. It has become the muse of several start-ups and established companies that are finding new and creative ways to take advantage of Bluetooth?s drastic uptick in efficiency, from the Nike Fuelband to the Pebble Smartwatch, which we previously featured on ?This Could Be Big.?

This week we spoke with a start-up out of Southern California called Tethercell, whose founders, Trey Madhyastha and Kellan O'Connor, are former rocket scientists who designed mechanical and fluid systems for the Falcon 9 rocket.

They were at CES this year, showcasing their new technology, which brings the tried-and-trusted AA battery into the 21st century. I think in general we look at the AA battery like a good piece of fruit, something that is fine as it is and best left alone. But where we saw a peach, they also saw a grill and some vanilla ice cream.

Tethercell is a plastic case the size of an AA battery, embedded with Bluetooth 4.0, which is then powered by an AAA battery that fits inside the plastic case. The Bluetooth-enabled battery is then synced with an app on your phone that allows you to turn the device on and off, set a timer and even monitor the amount of power remaining.

Trey and Kellan see this first version of Tethercell as a test bed for future applications and an opportunity to get the technology in the hands of the public. If you want one, you?ll have to wait until May or June, but you can pre-order now on their indigogo fundraising page, which continues through February.

No peace for Syria unless opposition talks to Assad: Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday there could be no peaceful resolution of the conflict in Syria as long as opponents of President Bashar al-Assad demand his exit from power and refuse to negotiate with his government.

Lavrov's comments at an annual news conference signaled no shift in the position of Russia, which says Assad's exit must not be a precondition for a deal to end 22 months of violence in which more than 60,000 people have been killed.

"Everything runs up against the opposition members' obsession with the idea of the overthrow of the Assad regime. As long as this irreconcilable position remains in force, nothing good will happen, armed action will continue, people will die," Lavrov said.

Russia has been Assad's most powerful foreign protector during the violence that started with a crackdown on protests but has escalated into civil war, vetoing three U.N. Security Council resolution aimed to push him out or pressure him to end bloodshed.

Russia flew 77 of its citizens fleeing the Syrian violence to Moscow via Lebanon on Wednesday but Lavrov said the situation in Syria did not require a mass evacuation of Russian citizens.

Speaking of large-scale naval exercises Russia is holding in the Black Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea, not far from Syria, Lavrov said the naval presence was a positive factor.

"Of course we have no interest in the Mediterranean region becoming even more destabilized. And the presence of our fleet there is undoubtedly a stabilizing factor," Lavrov said.

Mother bear knows best place to call home

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Mama bear appears to know what's best when it comes to selecting a place to call home, according to a new University of Alberta study.

The research, which may ultimately help protect Alberta's dwindling population of grizzly bears, is among the first of its kind to test the nature-versus-nurture debate on how large, free-ranging wildlife select habitat.

Lead author Scott Nielsen, assistant professor in the Department of Renewable Resources, and head researcher in the U of A's Applied Conservation Ecology (ACE) Lab, teamed with one of the lab's post-doctoral fellows, Aaron Shafer, and professor Mark Boyce of the Department of Biological Sciences for the four-year study.

Published in the latest issue of PLOS ONE, their work explored whether the maternal rearing of cubs shaped which habitats grizzly bears eventually choose. The findings "suggest that habitat selection is learned by young grizzly bears from their mothers and would likely be a more adaptive strategy than using instinct," Nielsen said.

"There are a number of strategies that appear to be handed down from generation to generation from mother to offspring. It's the 'nurture' side of the equation that is shaping the life of the bear."

The study is part of ongoing work by Nielsen and a team of master's students and PhD candidates who study conservation issues related to species at risk, such as grizzlies, to help in their population recovery. Other current research includes work on lizards, otters, boreal forest biodiversity and restoration of degraded ecosystems.

Through the ACE lab, U of A scientists are identifying critical habitats and needs of threatened species such as grizzlies, and determining the most effective management actions for their recovery.

The grizzly study, conducted in the foothills of west-central Alberta, tracked 32 adult and young grizzly bears that had been fitted with GPS radio collars. The animals' movements were monitored from 31,849 locations spanning 9,752 square kilometres.

Nielsen and his team observed that genetically related female bears shared habitat selection patterns regardless of their location, whereas male bears related to one another did not.

"This suggests that there are different habitat selection strategies used by grizzly bears and that these are learned early in life, because male bears don't participate in parental care," Nielsen said.

The grizzly is considered a threatened species in Alberta (there are fewer than 700 in the province), and if their habitat-use strategies are indeed learned from early experiences, "then the habitats chosen for relocation of 'problem' bears or to supplement threatened populations would be important," Nielsen said.

Knowing that habitat selection is part of a learned behaviour, conservationists tasked with relocating bears far from the animals' known environments should pay close attention to the habitats into which they are released, he added.

The research was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Alberta Conservation Association and partners from the Foothills Research Institute Grizzly Bear Program.

Dave Morin At DLD: Search Traffic On Path Up 40%, Expect Premium Services This Year

morinDave Morin, founder and CEO of of Path, is literally on a path towards making the private social network into a freemium business along the lines of Evernote. In an interview with TechCrunch, he said we can expect to see changes this year to the 'personal network' which famously limits you to your 'real' 150 friends and family. He said that since launching the new search engine on Path, traffic had gone up by 40%, and that is only with search being available in English. Since Path is available in 18 languages, there is plenty more engagement to be had with users. Next up will be Spanish, and then search will roll out to the other languages starting with Asia: Japanese, Indonesian, Korean and Chinese are next.

A look at the issues that those who govern the country will face during Barack Obama's second term. Up now: the Republican Party.

___

At the start of President Barack Obama's second term, the Republican Party finds itself lacking both a standard-bearer and a singular vision. No shortage of Republicans are jockeying to fill that leadership vacuum, and the divisions between the establishment and insurgent wings of the parties persist.

It's a far different place than where Republicans were four years ago. They vigorously opposed Obama's first-term agenda and were energized by tea party voters who responded in force to the president's health care agenda. That helped the GOP retake the House in 2010. But, two years later, Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, failed to mobilize all parts of the party's base.

So now, the GOP is trying to figure out how to recover from Romney's defeat and from popular vote losses in five of the past six presidential elections. It's also trying to determine how to cobble together a broader coalition of voters, and specifically attract minority voters who are more heavily than before favoring Democrats over Republicans. And it hopes to tap into a new generation of leaders to help rebuild.

As Republicans chart a new course, they have history on their side. The president's party tends to lose seats in Congress during the midterm elections of a second term. And the same party has won the White House in three consecutive elections only once in the past 60 years.

Graphic shows inauguration details and election results; UPDATES with additional seating details

(AP) ? For many Republicans, this is a good weekend to get away from it all.

With hundreds of thousands of Democrats traveling to nation's capital for President Barack Obama's inauguration activities, Republicans and supporters of last fall's GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, are leaving town, or staying put and trying to avoid the crowds.

After failing to recapture the White House for a second straight presidential election, many are not exactly in a partying mood.

"It's a good time to lay low," said John Feehery, the president of Quinn Gillespie Communications and a former top congressional aide.

As Democrats prepare to mark Obama's second inauguration on Monday by bundling up along the parade route or dressing up for balls, Republicans are spending the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with quick vacation getaways, quiet time at home or trips to the movie theater.

Few plan any "mourning parties" or "bawls" that have been the staples of past inaugural festivities for the party out of power. But invitations to parties tend to be scarce if your candidate lost, and watching television provides a constant reminder of November's elections.

"Invitations must have gotten lost in the mail!" former Romney adviser Ed Gillespie wrote in an email saying he had no major plans for the weekend.

Charlie Spies, an attorney and co-founder of the pro-Romney super political action committee Restore Our Future, was in Las Vegas for the weekend, hosting about 100 Republicans, including some former Romney campaign aides, at events in the Wynn Las Vegas and Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.

Spies held a similar gathering for about 20 friends and associates four years ago but said he was surprised by the amount of interest this time.

"I was expecting more than 20 but no place near this response," he said. "But I think people were excited to have an opportunity to be someplace other than D.C. and let President Obama and his supporters have their day in the sun."

Ron Bonjean, a former Bush administration and congressional aide who runs a public affairs firm, convened a small work retreat at a resort in Mexico and said he planned to use the time to prepare for new challenges in 2013.

"It's the perfect time for us to be productive and focused on the year ahead while Washington is consumed with swearing in the president," he said.

Republicans will be part of the inauguration ceremony, with members of Congress gathered on the west front steps of the Capitol for Obama's swearing-in. Many Republican lawmakers are attending state balls during the weekend to welcome their constituents.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and House Armed Services Chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., were among the GOP leaders who planned to attend an inauguration-related ball on Sunday night honoring members of the military.

After the parties end, the work to win back the White House begins. The Republican National Committee is holding its winter meeting in Charlotte, N.C., in the coming week. A major topic of discussion will be finding ways to reach out to minority voters and win elections.

Next weekend in Washington, a robust lineup of Republicans, including Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Romney's running mate, and Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Scott Walker of Wisconsin, will address conservatives at a conference organized by the National Review Institute.

For Republicans, this is a season of introspection and planning for the future.

"When you're winning, you're thinking about the possibilities. When you lose, you're thinking about what went wrong," Feehery said. "When you're winning, you're thinking about your next job. When you lose, you're thinking about keeping your job."

For some, speaking in English is a battle big enough | Daily Pakistan ...

KARACHI:?

Most people born in a home where English language is spoken frequently might not look it as a privilege but Areez, whose mother finds communicating in English a foreign concept, would beg to differ.

?Every time I speak in English in my house, my mother says ?chup karo Amreeki bachi? [be quite American girl],? said a smiling Areez, a student of grade eight. ?My mother doesn?t understand these words but I still keep talking to her in English. My teachers say that I should speak the language as much as I can so that I get better at it and feel comfortable in talking to other in English.?

The girl from Orangi Town said that initially, she was too shy to even speak fluently in Urdu. ?But the language classes have shaped my spoken skills. Now, I am confident enough to express my thoughts in a more articulate manner.?

Areez was taking two-hour classes thrice a week under the English Access Microscholarship Programme ? so was her classmate Quratullain Ansari. Both students belong to the first batch of the programme which started in 2010 and concluded in September 2012.

Ansari, whose father works as a driver in a private bank, said that the weekly classes had totally changed her reading, writing and speaking skills. ?The classes are a lot of fun. We are told to speak only in English and even that is fun!? said Ansari.

Changing perception

Sharing her views on the content of books, Shahera Akram from Landhi found ?a lot of differences? between Americans and Pakistanis. ?I haven?t met any Americans but the reading material makes it clear that they are not shy and express their feelings freely which is not common in our society,? she said. Her class fellows, however, interrupted by saying that the difference lies in ?Islamic values? and ?their freedom of speech.?

Sughra from Manghopir was pleasantly surprised that the classes were not boring. ?Before starting the classes, I thought it would be same boring style that was being taught in my school but I explored a new world in and felt visible changes as the Access programme made me confident,? she said.

Token of appreciation

Hundreds of students from various parts of the city, including Lyari, Ibrahim Hyderi, Hussainabad, Malir, Mehmoodabad and Korangi, attended the award ceremony of the English Access Microscholarship Programme on Saturday.

The Access classes are being organised in 16 different low-income localities of Karachi. The United States embassy with the Society for International Education designed a 410-hour modular language training programme in October 2010, which was launched across the country.

US Consul General Michael Dodman said that the programme can bring positive and healthy changes in the country. ?The participants can play a great role in the economy of the country -You [students] and your colleagues are the future of Pakistan.?

Pakistan, at present, has the largest English Access Microscholarship Programme in the world, with over 5,000 students, out of which more than 1,700 students are from Karachi.

Jo?lle Uzarski, director at the US State Department?s Regional English Language Office for Pakistan said ?It is not only for English language but also helps build their confidence and leadership qualities.?

ROCK?HILL, S.C. -- A man wanted for stealing a donation jar meant for a 14-year-old girl battling cancer has been arrested and charged with the crime.

The theft happened last summer at Scott's Food Store in Rock Hill.

Surveillance video captured a man stealing the jar and placing it in a bucket of water so nobody would hear it.? The jar had about $150 in it for Emily Elkins, who is battling a cancer which attacks her muscles.

Police say the man stealing the money is 50-year-old Johnny Ray Kendricks.? They arrested Kendricks Wednesday for shoplifting at another store and connected him to the donation jar theft.
Customer Lois Smith donates to the Elkins family regularly.

"She seems to be a very sweet child," Smith said.? "Just couldn't imagine anybody doing that, stooping that low."

"It was low, and it was ungrateful," said Emily's dad Paul Elkins.

He says the theft hurt him a bit.? He says part of him forgives Kendrick, but part of him hopes he gets what he deserves.? A judge ordered a $120,000 bond for Kendricks during his initial appearance.

He says Emily stayed positive because one of her best attributes is believing in the good in everyone.?

"Maybe he needed it more than she did," Elkins said, referring to how Emily first responded to the crime.

A dad's intuition says it hurt his daughter too.

"But she never showed it, never showed being hurt by it," Elkins said.? "She said, ?I'm glad they caught him dad, but it's time to move on now.?"

The donation jar is still at the store, only now it's attached to a hook so no one can steal it.

Smith still puts in her dollar because Emily is still sick.

She started another round of chemotherapy Thursday.

That treatment lasts five days, but there's a smile coming on the 6.

"She's going to the Justin Bieber concert," Elkins said.

Nurses at the hospital, plus someone donating money for a limo ride to the concert, made it possible, Elkins said.

Overall, the family has received about $20,000 dollars from jar donations and fundraisers.??

They use the money to pay bills and the cost of repeated trips from Rock Hill to Charlotte for Emily's treatment.

Lower oil output to cut Saudi GDP growth in 2013

Lower oil production will slow down Saudi Arabia?s economy in 2013 but the downturn will be offset by expansion in the non-hydrocarbon sector because of high public spending, according to a key Saudi investment firm. The Gulf kingdom?s real GDP is projected to grow by around 4.2 per cent this year compared with 6.8 per cent in 2012 and as high as 8.5 per cent in 2011, the Riyadh-based Jadwa Investment said in a study sent to Emirates 24/7. ?We expect economic growth to fall to 4.2 per cent in 2013, down from 6.8 per cent in 2012. This decline is because oil production is forecast to drop by 1.5 per cent after a 5.5 per cent rise in 2012. Growth in the non-oil economy will be 5.8 per cent,? it said.

Saturn's largest moon Titan gets a dune 'makeover'

Jan. 17, 2013 ? Titan's siblings must be jealous. While most of Saturn's moons display their ancient faces pockmarked by thousands of craters, Titan -- Saturn's largest moon -- may look much younger than it really is because its craters are getting erased. Dunes of exotic, hydrocarbon sand are slowly but steadily filling in its craters, according to new research using observations from NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

"Most of the Saturnian satellites -- Titan's siblings -- have thousands and thousands of craters on their surface. So far on Titan, of the 50 percent of the surface that we've seen in high resolution, we've only found about 60 craters," said Catherine Neish, a Cassini radar team associate based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. "It's possible that there are many more craters on Titan, but they are not visible from space because they are so eroded. We typically estimate the age of a planet's surface by counting the number of craters on it (more craters means an older surface). But if processes like stream erosion or drifting sand dunes are filling them in, it's possible that the surface is much older that it appears."

"This research is the first quantitative estimate of how much the weather on Titan has modified its surface," adds Neish.

Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere, and the only world besides Earth known to have lakes and seas on its surface. However, with a frigid surface temperature of around minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit (94 kelvins), the rain that falls from Titan's skies is not water but instead liquid methane and ethane, compounds that are normally gases on Earth.

Neish and her team made the discovery by comparing craters on Titan to craters on Jupiter's moon Ganymede. Ganymede is a giant moon with a water ice crust, similar to Titan, so craters on the two moons should have similar shapes. However, Ganymede has almost no atmosphere and thus no wind or rain to erode its surface.

"We found that craters on Titan were on average hundreds of yards (meters) shallower than similarly sized craters on Ganymede, suggesting that some process on Titan is filling its craters," says Neish, who is lead author of a paper about this research published online in the journal Icarus Dec. 3, 2012.

The team used the average depth-versus-diameter trend for craters on Ganymede derived from stereo images from NASA's Galileo spacecraft. The same trend for craters on Titan was calculated using estimates of the crater depth from data derived from images made by Cassini's radar instrument.

Titan's atmosphere is mostly nitrogen with a trace of methane and other, more complex molecules made of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons). The source of Titan's methane remains a mystery because methane in the atmosphere is broken down over relatively short timescales by sunlight. Fragments of methane molecules then recombine into more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere, forming a thick, orange smog that hides the surface from view. Some of the larger particles eventually rain out on to the surface, where they appear to get bound together to form the sand.

"Since the sand appears to be produced from the atmospheric methane, Titan must have had methane in its atmosphere for at least several hundred million years in order to fill craters to the levels we are seeing," says Neish. However, researchers estimate Titan's current supply of methane should be broken down by sunlight within tens of millions of years, so Titan either had a lot more methane in the past, or it is being replenished somehow.

Team members say it's possible that other processes could be filling the craters on Titan: erosion from the flow of liquid methane and ethane for example. However, this type of weathering tends to fill a crater quickly at first, then more slowly as the crater rim gets worn down and less steep. If liquid erosion were primarily responsible for the infill, then the team would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan. "However, this is not the case," says Neish. "Instead we see craters at all stages; some just beginning to be filled in, some halfway, and some that are almost completely full. This suggests a process like windblown sand, which fills craters and other features at a steady rate."

All solid materials under stress flow very slowly over time. This is called viscous flow, and it is like what happens when someone takes a scoop out of a fresh tub of whipped cream -- the material slowly flows in to fill the hole and flatten the surface. Craters on icy satellites tend to get shallower over time as the ice flows viscously, so it's possible that some of the shallow craters on Titan are simply much older or experienced a higher heat flow than the similarly sized, fresh craters on Ganymede studied in this work.

However, Titan's crust is mostly water ice, and at the extremely low temperatures on Titan, ice shouldn't flow enough to account for such a large difference in depth compared to the Ganymede craters, according to the team. Also, just like stream erosion, deformation from viscous flow tends to happen rapidly at first, then more slowly as the material adjusts, so one would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan if its surface was deforming easily through viscous flow.

As Cassini flies past Titan on its multi-year tour of Saturn and its moons, the radar instrument gradually builds up a map of the surface. To date, the instrument has provided data in strips covering approximately 50 percent of Titan's surface. The craters measured by the team are all within about 30 degrees of the equator, a relatively dry region on Titan.

"However, the presence of liquids on the surface and in the near subsurface can also cause extensive modification to crater shape, as is observed on Earth," says Neish. "In the case of Titan, liquids consist of hydrocarbons, either as wet sediments (such as those observed at the Huygens landing site) or shallow marine environments (such as the lakes observed at the north and south poles). Craters formed in similar environments on Earth lack any significant surface topography, including the absence of a raised rim, as wet sediments slump into the crater. It is possible that the lack of topography associated with marine-target impacts may help to explain the relative scarcity of impact craters observed near the poles of Titan. If Titan's polar regions are saturated by liquid hydrocarbons, craters formed in those regions may lack any recognizable topographic expression."

The team thinks these considerations are good areas for more research, but based on the data so far, the difference in depth between craters on Titan and Ganymede is best explained by filling from windblown sand, although erosion from liquids and viscous flow might contribute to the modification of Titan's craters.

NASA's Cassini mission, managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and the NASA Postdoctoral Program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, funded the research.

Apple adds new Read Them Here First section to Newsstand

Apple adds new Read Them Here First section to Newsstand

Apple has added a new section to iTunes that features magazines with issues that are published ahead of the print edition or other digital editions. Called Read Them Here First, the section currently features twenty magazines from Hearst publishing, including Cosmopolitan, Popular Mechanics, and Car and Driver. TechCrunch?s Darrell Etherington reports that the exclusivity window for new issues will vary by publication:

The exclusive arrangement varies by individual publication in terms of how far in advance you?ll be able to get the various Hearst titles compared to in print and from other online storefronts like Amazon?s Kindle marketplace, but each will be available at least a few days in advance, I?m told. Existing subscribers will get early access, as well as those signing up for the first time.

Hearst seems to have had a good deal of success with Newsstand for them to be willing to make this deal. With this arrangement, Apple gains a competitive advantage over rivals like Amazon, while also gaining an established position from which they can negotiate other such deals with publishers in the future should they decide to give this a try. Hearst is undoubtedly only the first publisher to make this sort of deal with Apple. Newsstand has been a boon for many publications, and it wouldn?t be surprising if more publications made deals like this one sooner rather than later.

Cops: College student abused, kidnapped wife

West Goshen Township Police

Lirim Rufati, 24, was arrested after police said he physically and sexually abused his wife over a year and then kidnapped her in an attempt to force her to leave the country.

By David Chang, NBC10

A Pennsylvania college student was arrested after police said he physically and sexually abused his wife for a year and then kidnapped her in an attempt to force her to leave the country.

Police said the investigation began after the victim?s friend called 911 and claimed Lirim Rufati, 24, of West Chester, had kidnapped his wife and taken her to JFK airport in New York.

The caller claimed the woman was being forced to leave the country against her will by her husband and father-in-law.

Police said she was found by a Port Authority police officer as she was about to be placed on a flight to the Republic of Macedonia.

Investigators said the woman is a Macedonian citizen who married Rufati, an American, through an arranged marriage in Macedonia.

The woman told Port Authority police in customs she did not want to leave the United States.

Read more stories at NBC10

She also told West Goshen detectives that Rufati took her from her apartment in West Goshen, drove her to New York and ordered her to board the plane to Macedonia as "punishment."

Police said that the woman accused Rufati of physically and sexually abusing her over a period of roughly one year while the two lived together in West Goshen.

Rufati was arrested and charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, rape, simple assault and other offenses.

He was arraigned with bail set at $250,000 cash. He was transported to Chester County Prison after failing to post bail.

Police also said Rufati is a student at West Chester University.
