Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal specifies Bose loudspeakers for London gig

The American jazz pianist-composer Ahmad Jamal has insisted on a full Bose RoomMatch system being installed especially for his sell-out concert at the Barbican Centre in London.

Ahmad Jamal concert at the Barbican

Considering his four piece ensemble ?an orchestra?, Jamal wanted a system that would deliver the most lifelike venue-filling sound to every member of the audience.

Audio design engineers worked alongside Ahmad Jamal?s production team to design a system specifically for the Barbican venue, with Bose RoomMatch arrays positioned to each side of the stage, and a central cardioid steered bass cluster in the centre.

Two ground stacked arrays consisting of modules and subs provided in-fill, and the whole system was powered with PowerMatch amplification.

The stage also featured on stage monitors ? one Bose L1 Model II with B2 bass for each of the four musicians.

Rome--Where Religion and Politics Meet

Having grabbed the attention of the whole world by his shock resignation from papal office, the subsequent actions of Joseph Ratzinger give an inkling as to his future influence within the Vatican and in global politics.

On Saturday, Ratzinger summoned Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti to an unscheduled private audience. With the Italian elections looming within days, the pope has already gone public on endorsing Monti?s candidature for election as Italy?s prime minister.

Interestingly, on the same day of his unscheduled meeting with Monti, the pope indicated that the day following the elections, he will have a meeting behind closed doors with a select few cardinals. No doubt the discussion will center around the outcome of the Italian elections and their impact on the future of the European Union.

With indications that the euro crisis is deepening, it is apparent that strong, assertive leadership is going to be required to dig the EU out of its financial hole.

Mario Monti has already described Joseph Ratzinger?s encyclical Caritas in Veritate as amounting to a blueprint for a ?new world order.? If Monti is elected prime minister of Italy, and if the September elections in Germany produce a strong, action-oriented chancellor who is similarly attuned to the worth of Ratzinger?s encyclical as the basis for a new world order, then it becomes entirely feasible that they will work, with the support of Roman Catholic EU elites, to bring that order to fruition.

Nothing else has worked to date to turn the European and global financial crisis around.

In his article titled ?The Fourth Reich Is Here,? published in our November/December 2011 edition of the Trumpet magazine, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry pointed to an enlighteningly prescient prophecy by Herbert Armstrong:

The financial crises we are now experiencing were forecast by Herbert Armstrong back in 1984. A massive banking crisis in America ?could suddenly result in triggering European nations to unite as a new world power larger than either the Soviet Union or the U.S.,? he wrote. ?That, in turn, could bring on the Great Tribulation suddenly! And that will lead quickly to the Second Coming of Christ and the end of this world as we know it.?

Mr. Armstrong prophesied that a financial crisis could trigger a chain of events leading right up to the return of Jesus Christ. Is this what we are now experiencing?

Whether such a collapse is deliberately engineered or happens by dint of circumstance is beside the point. The reality is that the world is heading for just that?global financial collapse, and many of the sharpest of observers are warning of the imminence of such a scenario.

So where does Rome stand in all of this?

Amid all of the confusing hype that the mainstream media has drummed up surrounding Pope Benedict?s resignation, a few keen observations have been made.

One such, given the effort that popes John Paul ii and Benedict xvi committed to rebuilding the Curia as a body in tune with their Holy Roman imperial vision, comes from Alexander Lee, a research fellow at the universities of Luxembourg and Warwick. He states that ?the fact that the church will proceed smoothly to elect a new pontiff during the Lenten period illustrates that the papacy is, for the first time in its history, well-supported by a smoothly-functioning Curia, and grounded in a sense of electoral authority that has finally overcome the instabilities of the past? (History Today, February 13).

Though this view flies in the face of that which the liberal press have sought to foist off on to the public in the wake of the undoubted resistance Benedict has faced from the middle ranks of Catholic hierarchy, it does speak to the strength of this pope?s relationship with the echelon that counts in papal power politics?the Curia.

As to Joseph Ratzinger?s continuing influence on the institution of the papacy itself, Lee comments that ?he has shown that the institution of the papacy is alive and kicking, and ready to face the challenges of the 21st century with confidence.?

The main challenge that the papacy faces in terms of its religious and political role is the same that the globe faces universally at present?the survival or otherwise of the global financial and economic system.

Fully three years ago Benedict made his position very clear on this subject. He wants a new system created under the religious vision of Rome. At a meeting with members of the Union of Industrialists and Businesses of Rome, Pope Benedict xvi reinforced his call for a new global financial order. Referring to the ongoing global financial crisis, Benedict ?noted how it has ?sorely tried the economic and productive systems of various countries. Nonetheless, it should be faced with trust because it can be considered as an opportunity for the revision of development models and the reorganization of global finance ??? (Vatican Information Service, March 18, 2010).

In pointing to his conviction that now was the time for a revision of the world?s financial system, in that which he described as ?a new time? of ?profound reflection,? Benedict used crusading language in his widely publicized encyclical Caritas in Veritate, calling for a new financial and economic order.

In that encyclical, endorsing the application of Catholic social doctrine on the global order, the pope highlighted that ?he had encouraged the world of ?economics and finance to focus on the person, whom Christ revealed in His profoundest dignity. Moreover, while recommending that politics not be subordinate to financial mechanisms, I encouraged the reform and creation of an international juridical and political order (adapted to global structures of economy and finance) in order more effectively to achieve the common good of the human family?? (ibid).

That is pure, unadulterated Catholic social doctrine: the merging of the religion of Rome with a universal social order that dictates juridical, political, economic and financial control. It is the very philosophy that underpinned the institution of the Holy Roman Empire of old. Its outcome is prophesied in your Bible in Revelation 13.

Just one year ago, during the G-20 summit, realizing the vital nature of the matters the G-20 was considering, the Vatican issued a call for a return to the old Holy Roman imperial approach to financial governance.

This move took us one further step toward the fulfillment of the great prophecy for our times penned by the Apostle John under divine inspiration almost 2,000 years ago. That prophecy, contained in the 13th chapter of the book of Revelation, speaks of a time when a great religious institution will hold powerful sway over a northern European empire to the extent of imposing its will on global trade and finance.

With that prophecy in mind, it is extremely interesting to consider the following statement released at the time by the Vatican Information Service (vis): ?This morning in the Holy See Press Office, a press conference was held to present a note from the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace entitled: ?Towards reforming the international financial and monetary systems in the context of a global public authority?? (Oct. 24, 2011).

The note was presented by Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson and Bishop Mario Toso.

In relation to the current global financial crisis, vis quoted Cardinal Turkson as stating that the pope and ?the Holy See are following these matters with particular concern, constantly calling not just for ?joint action,? but for ?examination of every facet of the problem: social, economic, cultural and spiritual.? It is in this spirit of discernment that the Holy See, with the note of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, wishes to make a contribution which might be useful to the deliberations of the G-20 meeting.?

The article quoted Bishop Toso as explaining that the aim of the note is to ?suggest possible paths to follow, in line with the most recent social Magisterium, for the implementation of financial and monetary policies ? that are effective and representative at a global level.?

Certain dissenting voices which were in opposition to the pope?s vision as declared in his encyclical Caritas in Veritate decried the release of this statement. However, one influential Eurocrat fully embraced it?Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

Upon its release, Mario Monti was effusive in his endorsement of the pope?s encyclical Caritas in Veritate, claiming that it was a virtual textbook for the operation of a global economy and universal society.

La Stampa reported that as he presented Benedict xvi?s social encyclical in Saint John Lateran, the pope?s cathedral, on Feb. 23, 2010, Monti declared that ?The Caritas in Veritate document resembles a technical governing handbook for society in which economy plays a fundamental role, as a natural outcome of ethical reflection, and even has the agreement of those who do not share in the Catholic ethical vision? (Nov. 14, 2011). Monti used that occasion also to publicly declare himself ?to be Catholic.?

Mario Monti is a member of the EU splinter organization called ?The Spinelli Group.? That group is committed to establishing a federal Europe based on the Catholic social chapter that underpins the pope?s ?governing handbook for society.? Endorsement of that Roman imperialist vision marks Monti out as one of those in tune with the European elites who are in the process at this time of carving up Europe into a continent where the many will become the vassals of the few.

Monti was summoned by Pope Benedict to an unscheduled meeting behind closed doors last weekend. Is it possible that their discussion centered on the pope?s will that, should Monti gain the Italian premiership next Sunday, Benedict would be encouraging Monti to lead a crusade for the implementation of the global order as outlined in Caritas in Veritate?

Time will tell. We certainly will not have to wait very long to find out.

One thing is for sure, with every nail that is daily driven into the coffin of the present failed global system, the great prophecies of Relation 13 and 17 come one step closer to fulfillment!

It was not a good week for Kentucky.

First, freshman center Nerlens Noel went down with a torn ACL in a loss at Southeastern Conference leader Florida. Then the Wildcats, playing their first full game without Noel, were smoked 88-58 at Tennessee on Saturday.

It was enough to knock Kentucky out of Monday?s NCAA tournament bracket projection, and the Wildcats? problems are two-pronged just four weeks from Selection Sunday.

It remains to be seen just how capable John Calipari?s team proves to be without Noel, who was averaging 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 blocks. The Wildcats will clearly be different, and the tournament selection committee will closely evaluate how Kentucky fares in the portion of their schedule without Noel.

Teams are generally judged on the totality of their season, with attempts made to limit any sort of impact of recent performance. But a significant injury changes that for the defending national champs.

There?s also the matter of Kentucky?s limited achievements to date. The Wildcats are 17-8, but are winless in four games against the top 50 of the RPI. Even with Noel, Kentucky still had to work to do.

It will likely prove more difficult without the star freshman, especially if Saturday is any indication.

Bubble movement:

One of the weekend?s biggest winners was Maryland. The Terrapins upended Duke 83-81 at home to tack a second top-25 RPI win onto its resume. Maryland (18-7) still has a dreadful nonconference strength of schedule to contend with, and enter a stretch (at Boston College, Clemson, at Georgia Tech, at Wake Forest) where it will be crucial to avoid getting dealt a damaging loss. The Terps are far from a sure-thing and are the third team out of Monday?s projection.

Temple is one of the most fascinating teams at the moment. The Owls (17-8) rebounded from a shocking loss to Duquesne with a victory at fellow bubbler Massachusetts and find themselves very much a part of the tournament conversation. But look at the recent results: Temple?s last five games were all decided by a point.

Illinois continues its surge up the board. ? [For more on Bubble Watch: Kentucky's NCAA tournament hope keeps dwindling, click here.]

HTC Windows Phone 8X Features

On the rear, the HTC Windows Phone 8X has an 8 megapixel BSI sensor, the BSI sensor is better for shooting in low-light. It also as an f/2.0 28mm equivalent lens with an 88? view making it ideal for landscapes and large group shots. The front lens is 2.1 megapixels.

When shooting you can add an effect and you can set the white-balance, exposure, contrast, saturation, sharpness and ISO. There is also face detection available. To access the camera, there is a dedicated button, even when the phone is locked you simply need to press and hold it. This button also acts as a shutter release.

Other features are very limited as the camera app is very basic. There is also the Photo Enhancer app installed which lets you edit your pictures and there are a lot of other photo apps available in the app store.

HTC Windows Phone 8X Handling

The 8X has a very stylish look with the 4.3 inch 720p HD screen filling the front of the camera. At the bottom of the screen are three buttons, one of which is the Windows symbol that you'll find on a computer keyboard. There is a lock button on the top of the screen with volume and shutter releases on the side. The back of the phone is rubberised making it easy to grip and less likely to slide off your table.

If you're familiar with Windows 8 you'll find the phone easy to get used to. As previously mentioned, the camera app itself is easy to use as there are very little options. There is only one mode, but you are able to change settings such as ISO and white-balance.

As with any smartphone, you do have to keep charging it fairly regularly, but battery life seems reasonable to us. We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

Shutter Response ? 0.175 secs
Focus / Shutter Response ? 0.2 secs
Switch on Time to Taking a Photo ? 46.8 secs
Shot to Shot without Flash ? 1.0 secs
Shot to Shot with Flash ? 1.3 secs

The camera is quick at focusing and between shots, but there are no continuous shooting options available.

White Balance Performance - Under the incandescent lights, the AWB has a slight colour cast, with the incandescent preset performing much better. Under the fluorescent lights the AWB and fluorescent presets both perform well, producing good images, albeit a little under exposed. We did find when shooting outdoors that the AWB produces images that are a little warm and therefore benefited from selecting the daylight preset.

HTC Windows Phone 8X Verdict

The HTC Windows Phone 8X has a decent camera and is capable of producing good images and won't let you down in low-light thanks to its f/2.0 lens and low noise at higher ISOs. The camera app is very basic, similar to the iPhone in many ways, although the 8X does allow you slightly more control over your images. You can use the pre-installed Photo Enhancer app to edit your pictures and they can then be shared on the web. Those who have owned an iPhone before will know how easy it is for it to fall from even the flattest of surfaces, there's no such problems here as the rear of the 8X is rubberised.

Should You Be Worried About Your Meat's Phosphorus Footprint?

If you've ever played around with one of those carbon or water footprint calculators, you probably know that meat production demands a lot from the environment ? a lot of oil, water and land. (Check out the inforgraphic we did on what goes into a hamburger last year for Meat Week.)

But have you thought about your meat's phosphorus footprint? Probably not.

That's why Genevi?ve Metson, a doctoral student in natural resource science at McGill University in Canada, did the math for you. She wanted to find out how much of the phosphorus that's mined and turned into supplements for animal feed or fertilizer to grow feed crops goes to the meat industry.

Pretty unsurprisingly, she found that meat consumption is driving much of the phosphorus use in the food sector. And, she argues in a paper published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, the heavy phosphorus footprint of meat is good reason to eat less of it, given that phosphorous is a finite resource that might become scarce one day.

"Changes we can make in our diet to decrease the demand for mined phosphorus can also decrease the use of other resources," Metson tells The Salt. "We need to manage our food system in an equitable and sustainable way, and we need to look at many resources and priorities simultaneously."

But not everyone agrees phosphorus needs to be a top concern for food security.

"Phosphorus is pretty far down the list of things we're going to suddenly run out of," Steven Van Kauwenbergh, principal scientist and leader of the Phosphate Research and Resources Initiative at IFDC, an international food security and agriculture organization, tells The Salt.

So what is this phosphorus stuff, you say? It's an element that's mostly locked up in rocks in the ground ? in this inorganic form, it's called phosphate.

It's an essential nutrient for humans and plants, and much of the world's phosphate gets processed into phosphoric acid to make fertilizer that helps plants grow quickly. Mining more of it from deposits around the world has helped fuel the huge increase in global food production. Phosphate production in 2012 was 220 million tons, up from 165 million tons in 1994.

In the last decade or so, inspired by the conversation about peak oil, a few environmental researchers began talking about the possibility of peak phosphorus and the dangers that a decline in such a critical resource would pose to food production. But even those researchers acknowledged that the estimates of global phosphate reserves ? and how long they'll last ? were fuzzy.

So the IRDC, which helps farmers in developing countries improve their harvests with fertilizer and other technologies, asked Van Kauwenbergh to do a thorough assessment of world reserves. His report, released in 2010, offered radically higher estimates of how much phosphate was available, and estimated that with current rates of production, phosphate rock reserves will be available for 300 to 400 years.

Other industry analysts agree that there's plenty of phosphate to go around for a long while.

"Peak phosphorus is a total myth, and I don't think it's anything to worry about in our lifetime," says Juan von Gernet, a senior consultant on fertilizers for CRU, a commodities research and consulting firm in London. "There is a huge amount of phosphate in the land, and if we run out of that, there are a lot of unexplored areas on the seabed which can be extracted if required."

Van Kauwenbergh also takes issue with Metson's suggestion that using lots of phosphorus to feed people is a bad thing.

"The people in countries with high [phosphorous] footprints have the opportunity to choose lifestyles and healthy diets," he says, and those diets mean more meat. "Now it seems these scholars would have us believe this approach is wrong."

Still, environmental researchers say that any resource we're entirely dependent on will eventually run out.

"We should definitely start to approach questions about decreasing our global demand for phosphorus," says Tina Neset, an environmental researcher who studies phosphorus at Link?ping University in Sweden.

Another reason to do so, she says, is that phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilizer runoff are responsible for a very current environmental problem: polluting waterways with too many plant nutrients. That can cause algae to bloom too much and deplete oxygen levels underwater ? a state that can suffocate aquatic life.

Area basketball coaches share in the 'shock' over passing of Detroit Consortium coach Al Anderson

, February 17, 2013 6:25 p.m.

Detroit Consortium boys basketball coach Al Anderson. - (www.consortiumcollegeprep.com)

The passing of Detroit Consortium boys basketball coach Al Anderson has left many within the area basketball community in a state of shock and mourning.

Anderson, the 40-year-old coach of one of the top 10 teams in Class C, collapsed shortly after a home game on Saturday night against Dayton Dunbar of Ohio where he was later pronounced dead at Henry Ford Hospital.

Although the details of Anderson's death have yet to be?determined, it has been reported that Anderson was treated for cardiac sacoidosis and that he had a pace maker put it.

Still, Anderson's passing has sent shock waves beyond the Consortium community.

A little less than two weeks ago, Romulus coach Nate Oats travelled with his team to take on Consortium in a much anticipated match up that Romulus ended up winning. It is almost hard for Oats to believe that a coach of similar age with the same passion is now gone.

"He obviously took Consortium from an average program to one of the top programs in the state," Oats said. "You could tell the guys liked playing for him. Shoot, he is only a couple of years older than me. It makes you think about what is really important in life. I was even thinking about that in church this morning."

But just like many other people, Oats still isn't sure what caused Anderson's passing.

"Maybe this was something coming and we didn't know," Oats said. "Maybe there was nothing he could have done to stop it."

Having coached against each other in summer leagues, Oats noticed a change in Anderson's gusto that could have been related to his health.

"In the summers when I coached against him, I'm kind of like the little bit more intense," Oats said. "He was kind of like that in the summer. Then it just kind of seemed like he wasn't as (physically) intense on the sideline. He wasn't up and moving as much is what I mean."

Oats has already talked with his assistant coaches and other fellow head coaches in the area about Anderson's passing. All seem to share the same thoughts that he was gone too soon.

"It's kind of like they are all in a little bit of shock," Oats said. "You know, he wasn't that old."

Although Oats admits not knowing Anderson on any deeper personal levels outside of their professional relationship, he mentioned that a tragedy like this helps reminds coaches of their mission and how every day is important.

"At the end of the day, we're all just trying to make our kids better people," Oats said. "You kind of develop a?camaraderie?amongst coaches even though you are competing and trying to beat each other in games. I think the end result of what you're trying to do is develope kids into good people. As far as I could tell, he was doing a pretty good job of that."

Oats, along with many that have heard about the tragedy, send thoughts to Anderson's wife and 14-year-old daughter. Also, Oats feel for the basketball players at Consortium that will look to finish the season without its head coach.

"The kids were just happy being there," Oats said. "It almost makes you want to pull for them in the state tournament now."

Anderson had been coaching at Consortium since 2007 and, as of now, the team plans to still play its home game against Dearborn Heights Robichaud on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Consortium, ranked No. 10 in Class C in the most recent Associated Press poll, will begin the state tournament on March 4 at Detroit Edison.
