Cat third eyelid function - A Conference of Birds

Probably not what you?ve ever seen, because if your cat is healthy will not be visible, but cats as well as the eyelids that open and close, have a third eyelid, called the nictitating membrane whose primary function is to protect the animal?s eyes.

This third eyelid is a membrane that is located on the corner of the eye, and has a gland that allows the cat?s eye is always well lubricated. As we said, not usually visible, and is usually the one who controls your state veterinarian when you press gently on the cat eye, at which time it becomes visible in the corner of the eye.

The main functions of the third eyelid is also lubricate the eye, protect it from external aggression and help remove foreign bodies that may have been introduced into the animal?s eye.

When the third eyelid is visible, it means that your cat has an eye problem such as an ulcer, inflammation or injury. This is because, in these cases, external eyelids tighten and cause the appearance of the eyelid that covers the eye partially or totally, to allow healing and prevent it from getting worse.

You can also occur if the cat has some physical discomfort or feel any pain, and in these cases the appearance of the third eyelid will be accompanied by apathy and exhaustion of our pet.

Therefore, when we see this membrane appear in the eyes of our cat, we take him to the vet immediately to determine the cause that made ??it appear. Thus, we can avoid many risks to the health of our pets.

Keeping your pet collared and tagged can be critical, a new study shows.

Is your dog or cat wearing a collar and tags?

Research shows that 80 percent of pet owners believe it?s important that dogs and cats wear personal identification tags, but only one in three pet owners say their pets always wear them. the importance of pet tags was highlighted last week with news of Willow, the calico cat who turned up in Manhattan five years after she went missing from her Colorado home. She had been embedded with a microchip as a kitten, which carried information about her owners 1,800 miles away.

While the story had a happy ending, veterinarians say it?s also a cautionary tale about the importance of pet collars and tags.

?Willow?s story points out why microchipping is a good thing, but shouldn?t be the only thing you do,? said Dr. Emily Weiss, vice president of shelter research and development for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. ?Willow was lost for five years. if she had been wearing a simple collar and ID tag, she might have gotten home the same day.?

To study whether the use of pet tags can be increased, Dr. Weiss and a.S.P.C.a. researchers in Oklahoma City conducted a study in which veterinarians and adoption centers placed collars and ID tags directly on cats and dogs. the group tracked 109 owners of dogs and cats who had been fitted with collars and tags during clinic visits or the adoption process.

Before the intervention, only 14 percent of the animals studied had been wearing an ID tag, but two months after visiting the vet or leaving the shelter, 84 percent of the animals were still wearing their tags, according to the research, published this month in the journal Preventive Veterinary Medicine.

Owners who had removed tags said they did so because the animal was an indoor pet or because the animal indicated some discomfort with the collar. a few others reported losing the tags, and one said tags were unnecessary because the family ?lived in the country.? During the study period, 18 pets were reported lost, and 17 of them, including 13 dogs and 4 cats, were found and returned home. Of those, nine dogs and one cat had been returned home because someone used the information on the pet tag to reunite the animal with its owner.

In 2007, the Journal of the American Veterinary Association reported that most lost dogs and lost cats weren?t wearing tags at the time they disappeared. fewer than half of lost dogs and just one in five lost cats were wearing tags at the time they went missing, according to the journal.

Part of the problem is that people who keep their pets primarily indoors often think they don?t need to worry about identification. but indoor pets can get out. In the case of Willow, a worker at the house accidentally let the cat out.

Another problem is that cat owners worry that collars pose a risk. the fear is that a climbing or adventurous cat may snag the collar on a branch and choke. Dr. Weiss said that the idea that collars pose a risk to cats is a myth, and that the danger of a cat being lost because it doesn?t have a collar is far greater than it being harmed by the collar itself. a.S.P.C.a. research shows that simple buckle collars work better on cats than the stretchable breakaway collars that many owners choose.

She said part of the reason cats seem to show discomfort when fitted with a collar is that they aren?t used to it, and owners should start putting collars on kittens. even so, she said, most cats do adjust to collars quickly.

?one of the reasons cats have a hard time with collars is that we don?t put them on,? said Dr. Weiss. ?we start dogs off young, but cats never have the opportunity to get used to them, so when they finally do wear them, they fuss.?

Dr. Weiss said cat owners often give up on collars too quickly. ?the majority of people who did not successfully keep a collar on their cat, it looks like they take it off in about a day,? she said. ?the cat doesn?t take it off. the owner removes it themselves.?

Dr. Weiss said the results of the collar intervention study show that most pet owners will keep ID tags and collars on their animals, but that the rate of tagging can be increased if vets and shelters make it more convenient.

?Having a microchip is a great safety measure for emergencies or if the pet loses a tag or collar,?? she said. ?But an ID tag is the simplest, easiest way to assure your pet is going to get home.??

How Do Utility Men Piece Together A Basketball Hard Wood Floor ...

It is a court where reputations are established, where accolades are gained and legends are witnessed. The lines in it clearly demarcate the limits where excellence can be carried out and where miracles can take place. When perceived individually, the lines and markings in a basketball court are nothing. Their fusion produces a world wherein basketball games are won and lost.

However, the ball floor that is noticeable during basketball games is detached when there are no matches to contest. The home court of a basketball team may also be utilized for other happenings like concerts, conferences and political rallies. Prior to the event, the arena crew takes out the portions of the basketball court so that the event team will have an quicker time setting up their equipment. The basketball hard wood floor is parceled into squares and it is established like a jigsaw puzzle.

Individually, the utility crew takes them from the concrete floor and stores them to a protected area to avoid thieves from making money from them. Because it is a segment of a well-known hard wood court, it may be sold for a steep price at digital auction web pages. Thus, the arena crew makes sure that court pieces are guarded always. Once the event ends and game day beckons, the crew would reinstall the hard wood floor. To avoid confusion, the utility personnel indicate every section with a specific number to imply where will they be positioned.

The moment they are done setting up the hard wood floor, they would set up the rings in accordance with the guidelines of the league. Then, the service personnel would see to it that there are no gaps in between the court pieces for this can result in player injuries. When it comes to special basketball games, especially during championship series, special sections containing the logo of the championship series is added in the hard wood floor.

The players can then warm-up once the hard wood floor has been suitably mounted to familiarize themselves with the parquet. When everything is fine, the crowd can come in and cheer for a pulsating basketball contest.

Having a hard wood floor is not only important in basketball. Rather it is also important as a solid base in homes. In Asia, they make use of thebamboo floor due to its durability that has been tested for generations.

Ed's big idea | Dr Shibley Rahman : His Labour blog and much else

Ed?s big idea

On Wednesday morning, on the Today programme (@BBCR4today), James Naughtie (@naughtiej) interviewed Ed (@Ed_Miliband). It was a wonderful interview, as I finally got a handle on what Ed had said in his keynote speech on Tuesday to my party?s conference.

The full text of the speech is here.

I was staying in one of the main hotels in central Liverpool. Whilst parked working in the foyer on my laptop, between #fringe sessions of #Lab11, I saw various BBC commentators wander past. I chatted briefly with James Naughtie and James Landale, and they were both lovely. Nobody quite knew what to expect from Ed?s speech, and, indeed, by the sounds of it, journos seem to have had real trouble in identifying what the ?big idea? from the keynote speech on Tuesday.

As a speech, the drafting was neither that clear, nor inspiring. The speech was not particularly focused, if listened to from start to finish, but actually the political message of the speech was a strong one. The theme was in fact the importance of the economy, and the importance of businesses making a profit as part of Society. Ed?s view of Society is different from Cameron?s: ?But I?m not with the Prime Minister.?I will never write off whole parts of our country by calling them sick.? ?His view of Society is supposed to be improved through SureStart, and other initiatives.

I said Society there, not State. Not pitting businesses against Society. Businesses are part of Society, an argument massively advanced by Prof Michael Porter and Mark Kramer in the Harvard Business Review earlier this year in his article ?Creating Shared Value?.

Ed cited examples of where businesses had failed in their responsible role in society. Having set the scene with a failed economic strategy by the Coalition, he then described the farce of the bankers? bonuses situation (a possible failure of corporate governance in renumeration), and the Millie Dowler tragedy (phone-hacking allegations against News International). ?It was at that point I became clear what the purpose of the speech was. One was to attack the political credibility of the Coalition in economics, one that has steadfastedly refused to be altered despite incredibly bad macroeconomic metrics. Secondly, Ed wished to contextualise the importance of economics in society and culture. The argument fundamentally rests on the schism between performance and success (bankers? bonuses for failures, and low salaries for hard-working families), epitomised in Ed?s sentence: ?An economy and a society too often rewarding not the right people with the right values, but the wrong people with the wrong values.?

In summary, I think the argument is actually a very clever one. It centres on ?fairness? ? why should students pay so much for paying for University while many CEOs are receiving salaries in ?business as usual?. Ed Miliband is simply talking about making companies responsible as stakeholders of Society. This has been known to corporate managers and lawyers for decades under the philosophy of ?corporate social responsibility?, where companies can indeed maximise shareholder profit, but alway playing heed to ?people, planet, and profit?.

It means that people are not rewarded for the wrong things (a mistake conceded by Ed about Fred Goodwin, but Labour should be extremely careful not to overindulge in ?mea culpa? (as indeed warned by John McTernan earlier this week.) Under Labour, inequality started to get much worse as measured by the Gini co-efficient (reported by Andrew Sheppard by the Institute of Fiscal Studies as early as March 2003), and indeed the word ??inequality? does not even feature in the index of ?The Journey? by Tony Blair.

This leads Ed to conclude sensibly that this requires a ?new bargain? to be built for the UK, with a realignment of social values for Society. Indeed, Ed talks about the need to improve manufacturing industry, but also low carbon-industries and technology industries. So, Ed does want the UK to have ?competitive advantage?. Indeed, he wants the City to have competitive advantage but on the terms of the rest of Society: ?But they must change so that they are part of the solution to our economic future, not part of the problem. ? Whilst the example of Southern Cross and ?private equity? were couched in rather perjorative terms of ?asset stripping?, and, in my opinion, the false dichotomy ?producers or the predators? ?was rather unhelpful, Ed does not deny the critical importance of business. That is why I fundamentally believe that Digby?Jones, the former CBI director general and a trade minister under Gordon Brown (but never a member of the Labour party). by describing?speech as ?divisive and a kick in the teeth for business?, has fundamentally misread the situation in term of macroeconomics and the current English law.

So, whatever you think of Ed Miliband as a person, give the idea a chance, as it?s an extremely powerful one, entirely consistent with how English law currently operates for businesses. If the speech were better drafted, the idea would have been immediately obvious. What?s happened has happened. Ed?s big idea was fundamentally about corporate social responsibility, but the question is as posed to me on Twitter yesterday morning by Anthony Painter. Will the Country buy it? ?My reply was that Ed has to crack a few eggs to make his omelette; and whilst the journos were treading on many egg shells this week, the omelette is not officially due until 2015.
