Disasters of 2011 come as boon for automotive MEMS components

EL SEGUNDO, USA: In an ironic twist, the terrible disasters that have struck Japan and Thailand in 2011, have actually helped to expand the market for automotive microelectromechanical (MEMS) sensors and actuators, as car electronic systems makers sought to expand their supply chains to mitigate the risk of supply shortages.

Automotive MEMS revenue in 2011 amounted to $2.2 billion, up 16 percent from $1.9 billion in 2010, according to an forthcoming IHS iSuppli MEMS & Sensors report. In a remarkable reprise, last year?s growth continued the notable 28 percent expansion that the market saw in 2010 as it accelerated out of the endemic global recession of 2009. The growth rates for 2010 and 2011 are well above average when compared to the 7 to 9 percent annual expansions in sensor sales that took place regularly before the last recession.

This strong growth performance indicates the disasters of 2011 did little to overall dampen the market.

?Automotive system makers learned the lessons of the 2009 downturn well,? said Richard Dixon, senior analyst for MEMS and sensors at IHS. ?After suffering short supplies of parts during that year, the companies expanded the number of sources for components, including MEMS sensors. When supply-chain disruptions appeared in 2011, in some instances these companies were able to re-qualify parts from new sources. This helped MEMS sensor sales stay on track for the year.?

Even after the impact of the disasters dissipates, the automotive MEMS market is set for more good news. The expansion of the market during the next few years is projected to be more rapid than was initially expected, equivalent to a five-year compound annual growth rate of approximately 10 percent starting from 2010. This means that by 2015, the automotive MEMS industry can expect revenue to top the $3 billion mark.

Safety first
The major engine of long-term growth for the market is the use of MEMS sensors in government-mandated automotive safety measures, such as in electronic stability systems (ESC) and tire-pressure monitoring systems (TPMS).

Another factor contributing to growth is the increased car production as new markets for the automotive industry expand. Although car production last year was only 3 percent above the extraordinary 25 percent increase of 2010, the rise in the total number of light passenger vehicles produced?now exceeding 75 million units per year?was enough to drive overall higher levels of inventory for automotive MEMS sensors.

Four devices account for the majority of automotive MEMS revenue: pressure sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes and flow sensors. Together, these four devices account for 21 out of 24 identified applications for MEMS in the automotive space, and represent nearly 99 percent of the entire value of the automotive MEMS market.

Prospects for 2012
Slightly lower revenue growth of approximately 7 percent is anticipated this year, due in part to a reduction of inventory later in the second half of 2012, IHS believes. The cuts in inventory, however, will be offset by an expected increase in car shipments up to 6 percent, along with the increasing impact of safety mandates.

In particular, this year also will see Japan adopt a mandate on ESC within its shores. Japan?s adoption is expected in October, similar to a timeline projected for Europe, where new models will be fitted with ESC to detect any discrepancy between the driver?s intention and the actual motion of the vehicle?with the ESC system automatically intervening if needed to prevent dangerous skidding.

By 2014, all existing vehicles in Japan as well as new, so-called ?mini? vehicles there will be outfitted with ESC?the latter being a local class of vehicle with dimensions smaller than 3.4 meters in length and an engine capacity of 660cc or less. The ESC mandate in Japan is expected to impact a total of 5 million vehicles in 2012, according to IHS Global Insight.

Barnes & Noble says it won't stock Amazon titles

(AP) ? Barnes & Noble is attempting to irk its publishing rival Amazon.com Inc. by not stocking Amazon published titles in its stores.

The largest U.S. traditional bookseller has lost customers to cheaper online rivals like Amazon.com and discount stores. To fight back, it has invested heavily in an e-bookstore and Nook e-book readers, which compete with Amazon's Kindle e-readers.

Amazon, meanwhile, has been steadily expanding its publishing operations, signing exclusive deals with authors such as filmmaker-actress Penny Marshall and best-selling self-help author Timothy Ferris. It also recently started an imprint for science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Publishers and booksellers have been worried about Amazon's dual roles as client and competitor. Some bookstores have expressed strong reservations about selling books released by Amazon.

On Tuesday, New York-based Barnes & Noble said outright it wouldn't sell the titles.

Barnes & Noble Chief Merchandising Officer Jaime Carey said Amazon's exclusive deals with publishers, agents and the authors they represent have hindered Barnes & Noble's ability to offer some e-books to its customers.

"Their actions have undermined the industry as a whole and have prevented millions of customers from having access to content," he said in an emailed statement. "It's clear to us that Amazon has proven they would not be a good publishing partner to Barnes & Noble as they continue to pull content off the market for their own self-interest."

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Seattle-based online retailer on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter results which indicated that its recent fast revenue growth might be moderating. Revenue rose 35 percent to $17.4 billion, but that was nearly a billion short of what analysts had expected. The shortfall was due mainly to a slowdown in Amazon's media business, which includes books, DVDs and content consumed on its Kindle tablet and e-reader devices.

Its shares dropped $19.41, or 10 percent, to $173.03 in morning trading Wednesday. Barnes & Noble stock dipped 7 cents to $12.

Miss. high court takes ex-gov pardons case

(AP) ? The Mississippi Supreme Court said Wednesday that it would take up the legal challenge to the pardons ex-Gov. Haley Barbour gave in the last days in office.

State Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, wants to invalidate dozens of the 198 pardons that Barbour, a Republican, handed out before his term ended Jan. 10. Ten of the people were still incarcerated at the time they got reprieves.

Hood says only about two dozen of the people pardoned followed the Mississippi Constitution's requirement to publish a notice about their reprieves in their local newspapers for 30 days. He wants the others invalidated.

Most of the people who could lose their pardons have already served their sentences and been out of prison for years. Some of them were convicted of comparatively minor crimes as far back as the 1960s and 1970s and have never been in trouble again.

Five of the pardoned are being held on a temporary restraining order issued by Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green. The Supreme Court extended that order until it can rule on the matter. It set a hearing for Feb. 9 and said it would try to rule on the matter quickly.

Barbour had no comment on the case.

Five men who worked as Governor's Mansion trusties had already been released by the time Hood sought the injunction. The judge told the trusties to contact corrections officials every 24 hours, but one of them has not and has missed a court hearing. He was served with a summons this week in Laramie, Wyo.

Matt Steffey, a constitutional law professor at Mississippi College, said the Supreme Court's decision is not a surprise because it would ultimately be up to the justices to decide the constitutional issue.

Barbour granted some sort of reprieve to 26 inmates who were in custody ? 10 full pardons; 13 medical releases; one suspension of sentence; one conditional, indefinite suspension of sentence; and one conditional clemency. Those being released for medical reasons or who received suspended sentences or conditional clemency did not need to publish notices in newspapers.

The Supreme Court's ruling means a lower court hearing on the matter won't happen Friday. An attorney for some of the people who got pardons had requested the Supreme Court to take the case.

Broward Center For Performing Arts In Fort Lauderdale ? EraNostra

A great number of communities nowadays are in disarray. You?re quite lucky if you live in a quite, safe, and friendly community; and you should be thankful for it. Can arts help build unity in a certain community? The answer to that question is a yes and this was proven by Broward Center for Performing Arts.

You see, Broward engages the community through performing arts. This is a dream for most cities all over the world but in Broward County and Fort Lauderdale City, the Broward Center for Performing Arts was the answer to their long time dream.

During the 1940s and 1950s, the cultural community of South Florida made great efforts to meet the expanding and changing needs of performing arts. Parker Playhouse and the Memorial Auditorium of Fort Lauderdale were the proponents of this performing arts center. It took many years of careful planning, dedication, and passion before the center was put up.

It was only in February of 1991 when Broward Center for Performing Arts was inaugurated. For almost 30 years of hard work, the dream of this county finally came true. The venue has larger seating capacity, better meeting facilities, and a spacious backstage. At present, the community now enjoys the best of entertainment and performing arts.

The center invites the whole community to take part in the performing arts. Any individual can try theater, ballet, and different kinds of dances. You can also learn more about music, from opera, classical, to pop. All throughout the year, the center holds different performances.

If you think that the show ends at the fall of the curtain on stage, you?re wrong. For Broward Center, any individual irregardless of age can take advantage of the innovative educational programs. The center has two theaters with more than 3,000 seating capacity and is open all year round. Anyone can schedule and plan an affair at the center. You and your guests can enjoy Broward Center?s first rate catering service and modern facilities. If you feel like something is missing in your life, it might be the Broward Center experience.

Here are some of the presenters in Broward Center for Performing Arts ? Broadway Across America, Florida?s Concert Association and Grand Opera, Miami Ballet, Jazz Society, and the Symphony of Americas.

Individual artists can avail of the different programs in Broward Center as these are available throughout the year. You can go for career advancement, research, creation, and development, career development, international arts, regional touring, apprenticeship programs, field networks, and many others. You simply have to choose a program that you?re interested in and then sign up for it. Other artists are there to join you. You can develop your skills for performing arts and someday be able to perform on-stage with famous performers and artists. Starting at an early age is a great disadvantage. If you have kids who like performing arts, encourage them to take up programs at Broward Center.

Broward Center for Performing Arts has been around for many years now. It has engaged the community to take part in performing arts and somehow, it promoted peace, security, and unity in the county. If you ever drop by at the city of Fort Lauderdale, don?t forget to visit Broward Center. This may be your chance to see a performing arts center that?s among the best in the world.

Lange 'thinking about' returning to 'Horror Story'

Prashant Gupta / FX

By Ted Casablanca, E! Online

The bey-otch is back!

Well, probably. At least that was what Jessica Lange -- Best Female Actor in a Drama Series winner at last night's SAG Awards--alluded to when we asked her whether she'd be returning to "American Horror Story" for season two:

READ: The 'American Horror Story House' Is on the Market for How Much?

"I'm thinking about it," she told us backstage.

Which is still far too coy for our liking ... but much more encouraging than the blanket "I don't know" Ms. Lange dished out after nabbing a trophy at the Golden Globes.

Because now we know that Ryan Murphy has already asked her to return. And, let's be honest, it would have been criminal for him not to -- Lange only stole every scene she was featured in during season one.

"As we talked about at the Globes, there just isn't it any better writing out there," Jessica gushed to us.

Then it'd be absolutely insane for the award season's scream queen to jump ship now, eh? We're putting good money on the fact that we'll see Constance (or, likely, some fab new character played by Jessica) in season two.

But don't expect more horror out of Jessica after Murphy's boob-tube sensation:

When we asked whether she would consider doing the ghouls and ghosts thing on the big screen, Lange quickly informed us: "I think I'm done with the genre after this."?

Are you thrilled that Jessica will probably be back on "American Horror Story"? Or are you worried that it'll be impossible to top the delicious evilness of Constance, and they should just leave well enough alone? Tell us on our Facebook page!

But seriously: Super Bowl ads that didn't kid around

Chrysler took a gamble on their sober "Imported From Detroit" ad. But the longest spot in big game history was a hit.

By Peter Hartlaub, msnbc.com contributor

They appear out of nowhere, as out-of-place as organic cheese on your nachos at the stadium concession stand. ?

Serious Super Bowl ads play on emotions instead of humor or sex appeal. They are generally few and far between, and if they bomb, they have the potential to bomb in a very big way.

?Obviously, it can be effective to pull everyone?s heartstrings. But you don?t want to miss,? said Tod Puckett, an executive producer at San Francisco-based advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners. ?In 30 seconds, it can be much easier to make a connection with humor.?

And yet when you look on any all-time best Super Bowl commercial list, the chances are good that at least few somber or emotional ads are included among the beer-loving frogs and office linebackers.

Puckett, who worked on the heralded E*Trade dancing monkey Super Bowl ad of 2000, credits the makers of Budweiser?s post-Sept. 11 ?Respect? with taking the type of heavy risk that many advertisers aren?t willing to consider.

Puckett hasn?t seen a flood of serious ads yet for next week?s Super Bowl XLVI, but he?s hopeful there will be some memorable ones.

?I?ve been very disappointed in the past few years with Super Bowl commercials,? he said. ?(Animals) and throwing bottles at people?s heads. I think we can do better.?

Below, in descending order, are our favorite serious advertisements of all time. We defined ?serious? as any advertisement that is not driven by humor, sex, action or visual effects.?

Volkswagen ?Big Day? (2001)

The commercial: Scenes of a woman preparing for her wedding are interspersed with a well-dressed man, becoming increasingly frustrated as he winds through traffic and other obstacles in a Jetta VR6. He arrives in a church where the woman is about to marry another man. The priest says ?Speak, or forever hold your peace,? they lock eyes and the screens fades to black.?

Tagline: ?Fasten your seatbelts?

Legacy: The commercial was a viewer favorite, and started a strong Super Bowl ad run for Volkswagen ? which had a winner last year featuring a little kid trying to use The Force in a Darth Vader costume.??

Master Lock ?Tough Under Fire? (1973)

The commercial: The commercial features a man on a rifle range, followed by slow motion video of a bullet piercing the center of a Master Lock. The couldn?t-be-more-serious narrator explains: ?The Master Lock model No. 15 sustained considerable damage, but did not open.??

Tagline: ?Whatever your protection needs, there?s a Master Lock ready for the job.?

Legacy: Arguably the first landmark Super Bowl advertisement, new generations are discovering it nearly 40 years later. Master Lock posted a grainy version of the commercial on YouTube, and it has received almost 400,000 views.?

Google ?Parisian Love? (2010)

The commercial: In a story told entirely within the Google search field (with a few well-placed audio effects), a student studies abroad, meets a woman, courts her, marries and has a baby ? using Google searches to book flights, translate French, locate a church and finally assemble a crib.

Tagline: ?Search on.?

Legacy: Google?s first Super Bowl ad was a huge hit ? both during the game and after, when millions watched the video. (Presumably after searching Google for it.) The inevitable parodies started appearing within hours, which was probably part of the tech giant?s plan.

Budweiser ?Applause? (2005)

The commercial: Travelers go about their business in a busy airport. People of all ages and all walks of life burst into a building applause, before the subjects of their tribute ? a group of military personnel returning from overseas ? walk wearily but purposefully into view.

Tagline: ?Thank you.?

Legacy: The commercial received a lot of buzz and positive attention for the beer-maker. Budweiser aired ?Applause? only twice in 2005 ? during the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500, before using it again in 2008 to support the United Service Organizations.

Chrysler ?Imported From Detroit? (2011)

The commercial: Images of Detroit flash by, as a narrator talks about the Chrysler?s comeback. The pep talk hits a crescendo as the instrumental to Eminem?s ?Lose Yourself" builds, a choir appears, the rapper points at the camera and says, ?This is the Motor City. And this is what we do.?

Tagline: ?Imported from Detroit?

Legacy: The two-minute version of the commercial received 14 million YouTube hits in less than a year. A few were critical of such a large ad buy so soon after a government bailout for the company. But the longest ad in Super Bowl history was hailed by fans and ad insiders.

Apple ?1984? (1984)

The commercial: Workers in drab grey uniforms march in lockstep, as an Orwellian leader dispenses propaganda on a giant video screen. Police with batons chase a woman in a white tank top and orange running shorts, who spins and hurls a sledgehammer at the screen.

Tagline: ?On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you?ll see why 1984 won?t be like ?1984.??

Legacy: The Ridley Scott-directed commercial was a huge hit for Apple, and is considered a watershed moment for Super Bowl advertising. Apple followed the next year with the shockingly depressing ?Lemmings? ad, arguably one of the worst in Super Bowl history.

Budweiser ?Respect? (2002)

The commercial: A team of the brewer's iconic Clydesdales takes a long, somber journey along a snowy landscape from Vermont to New York. When they reach New York City, the horses kneel solemnly with the space that used to be the World Trade Center in the distance.

Tagline: None.

Legacy: What had to be a huge risk for Budweiser was almost universally hailed. It routinely shows up at the top of all-time-best lists. Budweiser created a 10-year anniversary edition late last year, which was hard to distinguish from the original.

Coca-Cola ?Mean Joe Greene (1980)

The commercial: A limping Mean Joe Greene walks down a tunnel toward the locker room after a tough game. A boy stops Greene, asks if he needs help and offers him a Coke. The surly defensive end takes the drink, stops the boy (?Hey kid ? catch?) and throws him a jersey.

Tagline: ?Have a Coke and a smile.?

Legacy: While the commercial actually debuted during the football season in 1979, it became a sensation after it aired during Super Bowl XIV. A spin-off movie (?The Steeler and the Pittsburgh Kid?) aired, a duplicate version starring Diego Maradona was filmed, and the ad continues to resonate in popular culture.

Peter Hartlaub is the pop culture critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.
