MediaPortal posts 20 alpha and new remotes, teases 13 beta with Titan

Home theater PC owners only just recovering from their turkey or tofu comas will have some updating to do -- MediaPortal has been busy. The experimenters among us will most likely want to jump straight into the promised MediaPortal 2.0 Alpha Autumn, which carries new visual layouts and video backgrounds, a news plugin and a party-friendly music player. New versions of remote tools like aMPdroid, MPExtended, WebMediaPortal and WifiRemote bring their own slew of upgrades, such as HTTP Live Streaming in MPExtended or a "what's new" interface in aMPdroid. We'll readily admit that our eye is most drawn to the yet-to-be-launched MediaPortal 1.3 beta's addition of the Titan skin you see up above: going beyond what we saw in October, the extra-polished look goes a long way towards accommodating newcomers and the style-conscious. We're still waiting on publicly accessible 1.3 beta code, but everything else is waiting for open-source media hubs at the included links.

Fast forward to the past: NASA technologists test 'game-changing' data-processing technology

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? It's a digital world. Or is it? NASA technologist Jonathan Pellish isn't convinced. In fact, he believes a computing technology of yesteryear could potentially revolutionize everything from autonomous rendezvous and docking to remotely correcting wavefront errors on large, deployable space telescope mirrors like those to fly on the James Webb Space Telescope.

"It's fast forward to the past," Pellish said, referring to an emerging processing technology developed by a Cambridge, Mass.-based company, Analog Devices Lyric Labs.

So convinced is he of its potential, Pellish is meeting with scientists and engineers to explain the technology's capabilities and is using fiscal year 2013 NASA Center Innovation Fund resources to build printed circuit boards that researchers can use to test the technology's performance for a range of scientific applications. Pellish works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. He also has carried out preliminary radiation-effects studies to see how the technology's architecture holds up under the extreme environment encountered in space.

"I wouldn't do it unless I really believed in it," Pellish added. "This is one of the few things I've seen that is really different than what others are trying to do. I think this technology could fundamentally change the way we carry out onboard processing."

Analog-Based Microchip

The new technology is an analog-based microchip developed with significant support from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Instead of relying on tiny switches or transistors that turn on and off, producing streams of ones and zeroes that computing systems then translate into something meaningful to users, the company's new microchip is more like a dimmer switch. It can accept inputs and calculate outputs that are between zero and one, directly representing probabilities, or levels of certainty.

"The technology is fundamentally different from standard digital-signal processing, recognizing values between zero and one to accomplish what would otherwise be cost prohibitive or impossible with traditional digital circuits," Pellish said.

The processor's enhanced performance is due to the way the technology works, he explained. While digital systems use processors that step through calculations one at a time, in a serial fashion, the new processor uses electronic signals to represent probabilities rather than binary ones and zeros. It then effectively runs the calculations in parallel. Where it might take 500 transistors for a digital computer to calculate a probability, the new technology would take just a few. In other words, the microchip can perform a calculation more efficiently, with fewer circuits and less power than a digital processor -- attributes important for space- and power-constrained spacecraft instruments, Pellish said.

Although "there has been an overwhelming amount of positive support for the technology within Goddard" since Pellish began introducing colleagues to its capabilities, he is the first to concede that the technology isn't appropriate for all space applications.

Fast Fourier Transform

Because of its efficiency and inherent design, however, it's especially ideal for computing fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), and more particularly the discrete Fourier transform, a ubiquitously used mathematical algorithm in digital-signal processing. Among other things, Fourier transforms decompose signals into their constituent frequencies and are used to generate and filter cell-phone and Wi-Fi transmissions as well as compress audio, image and video files so that they take up less bandwidth.

Among other products, the company has developed an analog-based integrated circuit geared specifically for computing Fourier transforms. The team will use the technology, which the company donated, to assemble several custom circuit boards. "We'll take the hardware and see what it can do with our data and applications," Pellish explained.

One of the first applications the group plans to target with a version of the FFT integrated circuit is wavefront sensing and control, the computational technique for aligning multiple mirror segments, like those that are flying on the Webb telescope, so that they operate as a single mirror system.

In addition, Jeffrey Klenzing, who works with Goddard's Space Weather Laboratory, wants to evaluate the technology's use for on-board data processing, particularly for studies of the sun. "For a typical sounding rocket application, we send all data down and perform fast Fourier transforms on the ground. However, for satellite missions, this is not feasible given limited telemetry," Klenzing said. "A chip for performing rapid, reliable FFTs would be very useful for such heliophysics missions particularly with the push toward smaller, low-power satellites such as CubeSats and nanosats."

Pellish also believes autonomous rendezvous and docking and other applications requiring precise locational information would benefit from the analog-based technology. "We're trying to create a new market at NASA for analog processing. I believe it will give us a competitive edge. If we can push this, it could revolutionize how we do onboard data processing."

U.N. committee condemns Syria, Iran for rampant rights abuses

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A U.N. General Assembly committee on Tuesday condemned Syria and Iran for widespread human rights abuses, but both Damascus and Tehran dismissed the separate votes as politically motivated.

The draft resolution on Syria, which was co-sponsored by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Britain, France and other Arab and Western states, received 132 votes in favor - 10 more than a similar resolution last year received - along with 12 against and 35 abstentions.

The resolution on Iran, which was drafted by Canada and co-sponsored by other Western countries, received 83 votes in favor, 31 against and 68 abstentions.

The increased number of yes votes for both resolutions shows waning support for Tehran and Damascus in New York, envoys said.

Both resolutions were passed by the 193-nation assembly's Third Committee, which focuses on human rights, and will be put to formal votes next month at plenary sessions of the General Assembly. They are both expected to pass with similar margins.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari dismissed the resolution against his country as an attempt by "Western states to interfere, and we condemn this."

He also accused Qatar, which has supported the rebels seeking to toppled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the 20-month-old insurgency, of aiding and abetting Israel against the Palestinians.

Ja'afari repeated Syria's oft-stated accusation that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Libya and Turkey have been arming and financially supporting the rebels, an allegation all have denied.

Western diplomats in New York, however, say privately that the Saudis and Qataris are almost certainly aiding the rebels, and possibly other countries as well.

Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee dismissed the resolution against Tehran as based on unconfirmed allegations and an attempt to meddle in the internal affairs of Iran.

The Syria resolution said the U.N. assembly "strongly condemns the continued widespread and systematic gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities and the Government-controlled 'shabiha' militia."

It blamed the Syrian government and allied forces for "the use of heavy weapons, aerial bombardments and force against civilians, massacres, arbitrary executions, extrajudicial killings, the killing and persecution of protesters, human rights defenders and journalists, (and) arbitrary detention."

'CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY'

It also condemned "any human rights abuses by armed opposition groups," though the principal target of condemnation was clearly the government, not the rebels.

The resolution recalled U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay's repeated suggestion that "crimes against humanity are likely to have been committed" in Syria. It called for "accountability" for those guilty of human rights abuses.

The resolution on Iran voiced "deep concern at serious ongoing and recurring human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran relating to, inter alia, torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including flogging and amputations."

It also criticized the "continuing alarming high frequency of the carrying-out of the death penalty (in Iran) in the absence of internationally recognized safeguards, including an increase in the number of public executions."

The resolution also condemned the "increased persecution and human rights violations against persons belonging to unrecognized religious minorities, particularly members of the Baha'i faith and their defenders."

The U.N. special rapporteur for Iran said last month that members of the Baha'i community were the most persecuted Iranian religious minority.

Such resolutions on Iran, North Korea and Myanmar - and, since last year, Syria - have become an annual ritual.

The resolution on Iran received more yes votes than a year ago, when a similar text was approved with 80 in favor, 44 against and 57 abstentions.

Last year's Syria resolution received 122 votes in favor, 13 against and 41 abstentions.

Earlier on Tuesday the committee adopted a resolution that condemned human rights abuses in North Korea.

Disney?s new robot plays catch with your kids

6 hrs.

For better ? or worse ? the research lab side of Disney is building a robot that plays a decent game of catch, meaning parents can keep their eyes on Facebook while their kids get a bit of exercise.

The robot has a human-like appearance and uses a Microsoft Kinect to track the balls. After a few practice tosses, almost anyone can successfully play catch with it.

The humanoid is intended to give theme-park visitors a means to interact with robots without actually touching them and accidently causing thousands of dollars? worth of damage, according to the Disney Research video below explaining the project.?

The robot is programmed to turn its head, giving the impression it is maintaining body presence with its playmate and tracking the ball with its eyes. When it misses a bad toss, the robot moves its head as if looking for the lost ball or bowing in embarrassment. Other times, it just shrugs its shoulders.

Importantly, there are no temper tantrums or rants about lost scholarship opportunities. Instead, the robot keeps playing, entertaining the old fashioned way, with a twist of the future thrown in for good measure.

Health and Fitness through Drug Therapy Centers North Carolina

North Carolina, just like quite a few other states while in the US has seen an exponential increase in cases of drug trafficking inside the last decade. This is a significant concern for quite a few drug addiction remedy centers within the Carolina state. The continuous influx of migrants into this region, the big rural region, mountainous terrain, an worldwide airport and the ever raising amount of interlinking highways are just but a representation of some of the components that have contributed to the scenarios of drug trafficking right here. The many most illicit and addictive drugs could be gotten here. North Carolina drug remedy clinics have also witnessed an upsurge within the amount of people seeking counseling and physiotherapy help pertaining to drug abuse. The state has in the past enacted several laws to handle this menace nonetheless it appears elements are usually not just working out. Let us search at some of the normally used addictive drugs here;

Cocaine

Not merely is cocaine commonly used here in North Carolina but the state also acts as a shipment links to several other destinations including Pennsylvania and Virginia. This drug is again smuggled using many avenues with vans, automobiles and campers becoming the most prevalent. The postal corporation here has also been brought towards the light as obtaining facilitated numerous instances of drug trafficking and smuggling. Cocaine is generally sold in crack type that is easy to smoke. Street gangs command the business. Some of the effects which have been reported as a result of the use of this drug incorporate violence, thefts, crimes as well as an increase in the range of street gangs.

Heroine

While the use of heroine is cutting down in the past few years according to most drug treatment centers North Carolina companies, its prevalence can't just be overlooked in any respect. The use of heroine has in truth been noticed while in the inner cities. Even with the increase in purity, decrease rates and availability, the use of heroine has been escalating steadily here in North Carolina. Private and commercial automobiles are the most typically used carriers for this product. Once more, cocaine trafficking is also managed by unique street gangs.

Methamphetamine

As outlined by drug use statistics during the US, the use of this drug in North Carolina is to the rise in different components of the state. Smuggling of this drug is mostly overseen by cartels. The major sources of the drug in the US include things like Chicago, Texas, Colorado, California, and Florida. Despite the fact that several legislations have been passed to curb the rising use of this drug, really tiny good results continues to be recognized.

Club medication

While in the final couple of years, the use of Club drugs is to the increase right here in North Carolina. Some of the drugs which might be commonly trafficked through rave parties and evening outs involve MDMA, LSD, PCP and Ketamine. Some colleges and Universities have also reported some moderate provide of this drug. These drugs are again being brought into North Carolina through the use of Postal providers.

So that you can curb the use of these medication and offer counseling support to drug consumers, many teams happen to be setup to cater for drug therapy in North Carolina. Lack of enough legal enforcement approaches has however impaired the achievement of any successes this far.

Grenada enjoys improved internet service - Caribbean Analysis

Published: November 26, 2012

ST GEORGE?S, Grenada ? Grenada internet service providers touted the benefits the Grenadian internet exchange point (IXP) is delivering to their networks and their customers at a Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG) regional meeting in Grenada.

Senior representatives from LIME and Columbus Communications described the improvements in local Internet traffic routing and local content delivery experienced since the Grenada IXP was launched in May 2011.

An IXP is a physical facility that allows ISPs to exchange domestic internet traffic locally instead of through more distant facilities in the US or Europe.

James Pitt, acting general manager at LIME Grenada explained, ?The Grenada internet exchange point and recently implemented DNS root server copy are important steps in a collaborative effort between LIME, Columbus and the Grenada NTRC to improve the efficiency and robustness of internet services in Grenada.?

Speaking to CaribNOG?s technical audience of over 100 computer network specialists and enthusiasts drawn from across the Caribbean, Pitt described lower network latency, reduced average-per-bit-delivery costs, improved traffic routing and greater incentive to serve local content, as some of the key reasons Grenada has implemented an internet exchange.

Columbus Communications regional manager network services, Brent McIntosh, supported his LIME counterpart.

According to McIntosh, both Columbus and LIME benefit from the Grenada IXP. ?The collaboration between LIME and Flow to establish the Grenada IXP in May 2011, and then to migrate it to a neutral facility at the Grenada NTRC this year, is testament to our willingness to work together in the interest of developing the Grenada market.?

McIntosh told the CaribNOG gathering that the collaboration does not end with the Grenada exchange point. Both organisations will be encouraging and supporting the development of local content that can take advantage of the local IXP.

CaribNOG coordinator Bevil Wooding, an internet strategist at the US-based internet-support Packet Clearing House (PCH), commended the Grenada ISPs and encouraged local content providers to take full advantage of the local IXP and DNS root server.

?Opportunity beckons Grenada as it builds out its domestic Internet ecosystem. Companies, schools and entrepreneurs can now provide new local services based on bandwidth-intensive applications like video and audio streaming, VoIP, domestic data backup, new e-government services, distance learning; e-health, and other Internet-based applications that can leverage the local IXP,? Wooding said.

The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) and PCH have been promoting the proliferation of Internet exchange points in the Caribbean. The initiative has received support from the CTU?s member governments and, increasingly, cooperation from regional internet service providers.

There are now six operational internet exchange points in the Caribbean, located in the British Virgin Islands, Curacao, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti and St Maarten. Barbados, St Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago are in the process of setting up local exchange points. There are over 250 IXPs globally, most of which are located in developed countries.

92% Skyfall

All Critics (252) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (231) | Rotten (21)

'Quantum of Solace,' was a dour, dire letdown. This picture's a substantial bounce back, and easily the best Craig Bond picture. Emotional depth and all.

Sam Mendes' 'Skyfall': sleek, slithery, sensual

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.

Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.

Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.

"Skyfall" is a different kind of Bond movie, one that works just fine on its own terms, but a steady diet of this might kill the franchise. One "Skyfall" is enough.

Mendes and Co. has an astutely cunning way to keep our blood pumping every minute of the latest and, arguably, best time we've had with the enduring Bond in years.

Better than the average Bond, but not the greatest.

a crackerjack Bond film that cannily mixes the harder, more severe edges of the previous Craig films with a sly sense of humor

The latest James Bond adventure proves, at least in my opinion, that Craig has grasped the role better than any of his predecessors, including Sean Connery.

Skyfall succeeds in providing epic escapism with just the right balance of action, art-house aesthetics and melodrama.

I had more fun with it than I didn't, which is more than I can say about a lot of these big budget event movies.

Bardem's Silva and the spectacular image-making breathe new life into the old firm. Bond-age has rarely been so much fun.

This is a strong, fast, and sexy action story that gives us something different from the Bond films we have seen before.

Indeed one of the very best in the series' 50-year history. Director Sam Mendes gathered a superb cast and technical team for this 007 outing and their collective proficiency shows.

While [the film] gets more emotional and resonant as it goes on, it also gets much slower and narrower in scope.

Traveling the world, solving a mystery, hunting people down, killing some of those people...everything that you want James Bond to do. Then it takes an interesting turn.

Skyfall might stand as the lone example of a satisfying, standalone narrative blending with all those tried-and-true Bond tropes. Adele tune aside, Mendes makes nary a misstep.

... a bang-up job of interweaving arty visuals. dour backstory, in-jokes, and, for the series faithful, heartfelt comings and goings ... Bardem is the best (read most twisted) franchise baddie since Heath Ledger's Joker.

...just as Marc Forster went off the rails in Quantum of Solace during that silly horse-race juxtaposition, so too does Mendes go overboard with the deconstruction/dysfunction.

If our 21st-century spies must be dark instead of Pop, let them be presented with as much conviction and professionalism as in 'Skyfall,' the best movie yet with Daniel Craig as a particularly vulnerable bruiser of a Bond for a cynical post-Cold War era.

The villain isn't intent on destroying the world, and the gadgets consist of items you might find at The Sharper Image. The 23rd Bond outing delivers thrills all the same.

Skyfall's 143-minute running time doesn't seem a bit extended. Rather, one sits there taking in this 23rd Bond adventure, wishing to be shaken and stirred indefinitely.

Samsung Galaxy Note II (GT-N7100) Review

This is a big one! Quite literally as it turns out as Samsung continues to push the limits of what we consider an acceptable size for a smartphone. The Note II or GT-N7100 polishes off most of the shortcomings of the Note N7000 along with a little flavour from the Galaxy S III and a sprinkle of Jelly Bean to top it all off. This phone or tablet or phablet, whatever u want to call it, actually looks a lot like a stretched out S III and for the most part, it is just that. Now, given the S III wasn?t all that popular when it came to aesthetics, was it wise for Samsung to model its new flagship around it? Let?s find out what new tricks the phablet has learnt over the course of a year.

Design and Build
While the Note II does resemble the S III in appearance, the feel and finish of the phone is completely different and miles ahead. Despite its plastic chassis and fake chrome trim, it really feels like a premium device and dare we say, is easily one of the best-built phones in the market today. The brushed metal-like finish around the screen and on the back is coated with some sort of lacquer, so despite a glossy finish, it won?t attract scratches. The chrome trim along the sides, however, looks like it would wear off in time. The front is completely dominated by the massive 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED slab that's also protected by Gorilla Glass 2.

Very well built

?

The sides feature the power/sleep button and the volume rocker while the microUSB ports is placed at the bottom followed by the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top. The S Pen stylus docks in around the back, besides the speaker grill. Lifting up the cover, we are greeted by the chunky 3100mAh battery along with the microSIM slot and the hot-swappable microSD card slot. At 183g, the Note II is heavier than its predecessor, but thanks to the wider screen, Samsung has managed to slim it down to 9.4mm in depth from 9.7mm.

The chrome trim may wear off after sometime

?

We were highly impressed with the build and finish of the Note II, which is much better than the S III and does not feel cheap or plasticky, so kudos to Samsung for rectifying this. It is, however, not the most comfortable phone to walk around with. While it may just about fit in your pants pocket, for tasks like trying to sit down, you?ll have no choice but to remove the phone before doing so. Perhaps, that?s why most Note users simply hold it in their hands and don?t bother slipping it in their pants.

Features
Interface
We?ve heard horror stories about Samsung?s TouchWiz user interface and have even told some ourselves; however, we?d like to report that those are a thing of the past now. Samsung?s slightly tweaked Nature UX from the S III and Jelly Bean make a perfect couple as the experience is just as good as stock Jelly Bean, thanks to improvements from Samsung. The only time we probably noticed some lag (and that too very minor) was while scrolling through widgets. The gallery has gotten a slight upgrade as well and you can now view your photos in funky different ways, the coolest of which is a 3D spiralling view. All the features from the S III make a comeback like S Voice, Direct Call, etc. To read more about them, do check out our coverage of the Galaxy S III. Today, we?ll focus on some of the exclusive new features for the Note II, starting with the improved S Pen.

TouchWiz does not suck anymore

?

The S Pen works based on Wacom?s inductive technology so you never need batteries for it. It?s also gotten a lot more sensitive to finer inputs so you can draw with a lot more precision, similar to the Note 10.1. The software is also a lot better this time in recognising your handwriting even if you write badly. We tried deliberately writing lazily and it managed to decipher the word correctly about 95 percent of the time, which is very good. You can use this while typing out a message, chatting or simply taking down notes. Holding down the button on the pen puts the pen in crop mode. You then simply crop out portions of the screen, which gets saved to the clipboard so you can paste it in a message. Pulling out the pen automatically opens up a new S Note window. You?re also presented with a special homescreen with a widget that lets you directly open up different S Note templates. There?s a floating tab that sits along the edge of the screen (which can be repositioned to any of the four edges) and gives you access to apps that can work in split screen mode. Just like the Note 10.1, you can have two apps running simultaneously in portrait mode. This actually works a lot better than it did in the Note 10.1 and there?s absolutely no hint of lag when interacting with both the apps. We couldn?t find a way to manually add apps that we wanted to the list though. Apps optimised for the S Pen include S Note, S Planner and a cool app called Paper Artist, which makes for some really cool Instagram pics. One more cool feature of the S Pen is Air View. Once enabled, you get a little mouse pointer on the screen when you hover the pen over it. You can use this feature for scrolling through webpages, read tooltips over icons and links, etc.

S Pen features are pretty cool

?

Another reason why everything runs buttery smooth is because of the mighty quad-core Exynos SoC onboard. It?s the same one as in the S III, only now it runs at 1.6GHz instead of 1.4GHz. This gives it the extra oomph needed for the split screen functionality without even skipping a beat. This reflects very well in the benchmarks as well, as we got a high score of 64MFLOPS in single-threaded test of Linpack while the multi-thread test gave a score of 190MFLOPS. AnTuTu delivered similar performance, posting a score of 13440, the highest we?ve come across so far.

Obama blasts senators: 'They should go after me'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Setting an unflinching tone for his second term, President Barack Obama on Wednesday accused two top Republicans senators of lobbing outrageous criticism at his United Nations ambassador instead of confronting him directly over a deadly attack on Americans in Libya.

"They should go after me," Obama said, referring to Sens. John McCain of Arizona, his 2008 White House rival, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

Obama's comments, at a far-reaching news conference, underscored how much the Libya attack shadows the president, how strongly U.N. ambassador Susan Rice is being considered for secretary of state and how eager Obama is for some fights even as he talks compromise on others.

For the first time, Obama reflected on the meaning of his re-election victory, offering a more limited reading of his economic mandate from voters. He promised to begin work on a major immigration bill soon after his January inauguration and said he would at least pursue broader ways to attack the global-warming climate change.

Pressed on challenges abroad, Obama said he was not ready to formally recognize Syria's opposition leadership or arm it. The president also insisted there was still time to peacefully solve a nuclear standoff with Iran, saying he would push again soon for international talks "to get this thing resolved."

Obama sketched out his first priorities, most urgently a plea for Congress to join him in preventing a new year's tax increase for families earning under $250,000. That issue is part of a broader set of tax-and-spending decisions that must be resolved by Jan. 1 or the economy could tank. Obama himself used the word "recession."

Despite his hopes for an economic focus, Obama's postelection began with a scandal unfolding on his watch. He said he has seen "no evidence" of any national security breach in the sex scandal that led his CIA director, David Petraeus, to resign in disgrace over an extramarital affair.

The most memorable exchange of the session with reporters involved the U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice.

Rarely does such a fight unfold before even an official nomination is made.

Obama's admonishing of McCain and Graham came on a day in which both men had critical words for Rice. To some Republicans, she is the face of the debacle in Libya because of her comments on Sunday talk shows five days after the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that left four Americans dead.

"If Sen. McCain and Sen. Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me," he said. "I'm happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador who had nothing to do with Benghazi ... To besmirch her reputation is outrageous."

"Mr. President, don't think for one minute I don't hold you ultimately responsible," Graham shot back.

Rice's role is back at the fore because of congressional hearings into the Libya attack and because she is believed to be a front-runner for secretary of state. Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to leave that job soon. McCain has said earlier Wednesday he would seek to block Rice if nominated, and Graham said, "I don't trust her."

Obama said he if wants to nominate Rice, he will.

On Syria, Obama spoke after France became the first Western nation to recognize the new opposition group as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people. "We're not yet prepared to recognize them as some sort of government in exile," Obama said. "But we do think that it is a broad-based representative group."

The Libya episode is also entangled with the sudden career fall of the CIA chief at the time, David Petraeus. He resigned last week after disclosing an extramarital affair that had been uncovered during an FBI investigation into another matter. The same scandal has also put a cloud of the Afghan war commander, Gen. John Allen.

Obama said he hoped the scandal would end up being but a "single side-note" in Petraeus' stellar career. He was more measured in his defense of the FBI and in the way he was just notified about the Petraeus investigation last week, saying he was withholding judgment until more facts come.

Between the personnel controversy and the effort to prevent a fiscal crisis on Jan. 1, Obama conceded he had not had much reflection on the campaign.

"I think everybody forgets that the election was only a week ago," he said. "I know I've forgotten."

He said he still plans to reach out to his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, to get ideas on improving the government and the economy. And, yes, he must work better with Congress.

"All of us have responsibilities to see if there are things we can improve on," he said. "I don't exempt myself from needing to, you know, do some self-reflection."

Obama won a second term handily in the electoral college, but about 48 percent of the voting public wanted Republican Mitt Romney in office instead.

"I'm more than familiar with all the literature about presidential overreach in second terms," Obama said.

He said the only mandate he got from voters was simple ? "work really hard to help us."

Rachel Adams: Multiple Intelligences

Last week, a doctor told us our son's IQ is 67.

What he actually said was that its probably somewhere around 67. He wasn't able to get an exact score because Henry couldn't understand entire sections of the test. He did fine with some of the labeling and matching and certain kinds of puzzles. But he had no idea what to do with the block patterns and no ability to assign categories. Riddles were lost on him. When presented with the problem: "I am an animal with feathers. What am I?" he answered, "Cat."

"If I asked the question in a different way, I think he would know the answer," the doctor said somewhat apologetically. "It's just that I have to follow the script so that we can compare him with other kids his age."

This wasn't what we wanted to hear from the expert we had paid generously to test our son under the best possible conditions, giving him every chance to succeed. We were there to get advice on where Henry should go to school, and this doctor's report would be an important factor in whether he would be admitted. It wasn't that I disagreed with his assessment of Henry's abilities, which seemed accurate. It was just that I found the results so devastating. Henry is my son, and when I look at him I see a boy who is clever and funny and full of potential.

A word of advice: If you ever find yourself in my situation, don't stand in the hall outside the doctor's office and Google "IQ under 70." The first thing to come up is a Wikipedia entry on "Mental Retardation." Further down the page you'll find links to "Lowest IQ World Record" and "Texas Executes Man with IQ of 61." A link to "IQ reference chart" tells me that Alfred Binet, the French psychologist who invented the concept of intelligence quotient in the early twentieth century, classified those with an IQ of 50-69 as "Morons." His American colleague Lewis Terman labeled this category "definite feeble mindedness." Today, the ugly clinical term for anyone with an IQ south of 70 is "mental retardation," ranked on a sliding scale from mild to profound.

The IQ test has an unsavory history in the United States. Despite his unfortunate terminology, Alfred Binet was one of the good guys. He was skeptical of the prevailing science of craniometry -- which sought to correlate intelligence with head size -- and looked for other ways to measure human intelligence. His scale was meant to identify children who needed extra educational support. Recognizing that intelligence could be shaped and nurtured, he advocated programs tailored to their particular needs and challenges. When Binet's scale traveled to America, it was put to more specious uses. The I.Q. became a measure to discredit entire populations. It justified a host of nasty prejudices, including anti-miscengenation laws, restrictions on immigration and enforced sterilization of the poor, criminals and the disabled.

Today, the limitations of the IQ test are widely recognized. We know that intelligence isn't a fixed quality that can be identified on a numerical scale. We also know that test results are correlated to socio-economic class, rewarding those who come rom more affluent and well-educated families. Not only do we recognize multiple kinds of intelligence, but also that adaptive functioning plays an important part in a person's ability to succeed in the world. In her eye-opening book, Now You See It, Cathy Davidson points out that the IQ test is the product of early twentieth-century values of standardization, uniformity and linearity. In our digital age, these modes are simply obsolete. She writes, "If the multiple-choice test is the Model T of knowledge assessment, we need to ask, What is the purpose of a Model T in an Internet age?"

Much as I recognized the flaws in the test, I found it impossible not to care about the results. I know how much they matter. Between us, my husband and I have nearly 25 years of higher education, three master's degrees, two Ph.Ds and a J.D. We've gone far in life by being extremely good test takers. I teach at an Ivy League university where intelligence is held to be the highest virtue. It was cause for celebration when the SAT scores of our first year entering class outranked those of Yale's. I see the opportunities made available to students who, because of talent or training, know how to succeed at standardized tests.

Looking back at the worn folders overflowing with Henry's transition materials, I'm struck by how every aspect of my son's abilities and potential has been tracked, evaluated and assessed. Diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, he has been described in terms of delay and deficit from his first moments of life. Sometimes his results were so low the percentile was measured in the negative, as if the test could imagine no child of his age capable of sinking to such depths. There is something unseemly about the sheer quantity of paper, the hours of work represented by those voluminous reports and the clear inadequacy of the scores and percentiles it all boils down to. What do those numbers tell about the value of a life? Or even the value of what any given child might bring to his or her classroom?

After he delivered our test scores, the doctor presented us with the depressingly short list of schools that would be appropriate for Henry. He told us it might be possible to massage the test results to give Henry a score just above 70. I took little comfort from his offer, which seemed only to reinforce the absurdity of our situation.

When I got outside, it was already dark and a nasty storm was blowing in. I hurried toward the subway, wishing I were already home. I was trying to escape the weather. But I also knew that at home I would find the best rejoinder to the experts and the tests and the scores in the warm, complicated reality of my own child.

Obama's grand bargain: economy first, deficit second

Any 'grand bargain' to avert the fiscal cliff should contain a starting trigger that begins spending cuts and any middle-class tax increases only when the economy is strong enough, Reich writes.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / November 14, 2012

President Barack Obama steps up to the podium before a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington Wednesday. A strong economy should take priority over deficit reduction, Reich writes.

When he meets with Congressional leaders this Friday to begin discussions about avoiding the upcoming ?fiscal cliff,? the President should make crystal clear that America faces two big economic challenges ahead: getting the economy back on track, and getting the budget deficit under control.

He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Clinton. He has written 13 books, including ?The Work of Nations,? his latest best-seller ?Aftershock: The Next Economy and America?s Future," and a new?e-book, ?Beyond Outrage.??He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine and chairman of Common Cause.

But the two require opposite strategies. We get the economy back on track by boosting demand through low taxes on the middle class and more government spending. We get the budget deficit under control by raising taxes and reducing government spending. (Taxes can be raised on the wealthy in the short term without harming the economy because the wealthy already spend as much as they want ? that?s what it means to be rich.)

It all boils down to timing and sequencing: First, get the economy back on track. Then tackle the budget deficit.?

Rick Scott Signals Willingness To Negotiate On Health Care Law

Florida Governor Rick Scott, one of the most outspoken critics of President Obama's health care law, signaled Tuesday that he may be ready to drop his longstanding opposition to Obamacare.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the Republican said that he is willing to negotiate with the federal government on implementing the new program.

"The election is over and President Obama won," Scott said. "I'm responsible for the families of Florida. ? If I can get to yes, I want to get to yes."

"I don't think anyone involved in trying to improve health care should say 'no, no, no,'" Scott continued. "Let's have a conversation."

Scott's latest comments appear to mark a dramatic turn for the Republican governor. Last week, he insisted that he would continue to reject provisions that would expand Medicaid and set up state-run health insurance exchanges. However, Scott and other Republican governors have faced increasing pressure as Friday's deadline to submit plans for state-run exchanges looms. HuffPost's Jeff Young reported:

States have until Friday to tell the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services whether they will set up their own health insurance exchanges, partner with the federal government, or leave the task to U.S. authorities. Based on states' progress before this week, consulting company Avalere Health predicts 20 states will operate exchanges alone, 13 will do jointly with the federal government, and the Department of Health and Human Services will manage the remainder.

Republican governors who opposed the health care reform law have had more than two years to decide whether to go along, but continued to hope that Congress or the Supreme Court would succeed in repealing it. When Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney last Tuesday, the last, best hope of avoiding the law disappeared. Knowing many states hadn't made plans, the Obama administration has given them more time to hammer out the details.

As WUSF reports, Scott has taken few steps to create a blueprint for a state-run health insurance exchange. However, the Department of Health & Human Services decided last week to give governors a little more leeway, allowing states to submit their full plan by December 14 so long as they indicate their intention to do so by the initial November 16 deadline.

The Dos and Don'ts of Dating on 'The Mindy Project': Danny Castellano Edition

the mindy project recapIt was a kooky day on The Mindy Project. Everyone seemed to want to prove something to Mindy, but in the end, she had the last word (whether she realized it or not). First up was Danny Castellano, hell-bent on proving to Mindy that she wouldn't be able to handle being his gynecological patient because she is attracted to him. Mindy, aghast at the insinuation that she a.) likes Danny Castellano in his tight shirts (sidenote: who doesn't?), that b.) she wouldn't be able to handle it, and c.) she and Danny don't have a personal relationship, was hell-bent on proving Danny wrong. Throwing down the gauntlet, eh, Dr. Castellano?

Mindy didn't play around, though?while she was nervous at first, in the end, she had the last laugh (thanks to her inner warrior, Beyonce PadThai): she proved to Danny that she could handle being his patient, but that he couldn't! TWIST!

Dr. Castellano wasn't the only one on Mindy's case: handsome-faced Dr. Jeremy Reed (aka Mindy's former hook-up buddy) wanted his watch back, and he wanted it now. But Mindy wasn't budging: Jeremy was mean, so he gets no watch. Only Jeremy wasn't going to let go that easy, and enlists Morgan and Betsy to break into her apartment and retrieve said watch. And while they did succeed in their breaking and entering shenanigans, in the end, Betsy's admission that Jeremy wasn't a very likable person forced him to leave the watch at Mindy's place?self-served retribution for his being a jerk? Perhaps! Only time will tell.

But in the end, we know the main draw of this show is its rom-com qualities, so we present to you this week's dating dos and don'ts from The Mindy Project.

1.) Do wear his oversized Oxford shirt: ...it's too big, because you're a girl! Duh! But also, look how adorable!

2.) Don't let him wear your jeans: even if it's by accident. Because the shirt is cute, the jeans are like a lap-band advertisement.

3.) Do not let him compare you to a lamp: because you do more than just light up a room (although you do do that, too)!

4.) Do always have a condom ready: It's always good to be prepared but don't leave them around so it looks like you're using them, you know, all the time.

5.) Do not criticize his past marriage: It's just mean. Low blow, lady.

6.) Always have a good listener on stand-by: and then talk to your real, insightful best friend.

7.) Do have a secret warrior name: it will empower you in times of need.

8.) Don't tell anyone what that secret warrior name is: it's for your ears only! (I'm looking at you, Beyonce PadThai.)

9.) Don't let emotional feelings get in the way: It's about more than your deep and meaningful friendship, sometimes. Sometimes it's about health!

10.) Don't be afraid to gloat: when you win a bet, it feels good to celebrate it! Now go find a new gynecologist.

Music to my (baby's) Ears: Baby Blanket Music Giveaway and Review

I love music: Country, Christian, Indie, Oldies.

Since having my first baby, I have often wondered what type of music I should play for her. ?I considered buying some baby CD?s, but the sheer number of options overwhelmed me, so I put it off. Thankfully I was asked to review Baby Blanket Music.

Baby Blanket Music is a collection of albums featuring soothing lullaby arrangements of songs made famous by well-known artists. Think in terms of artists like The Beatles, Lady Gaga and more.? The music is arranged by Josh Rutt, a teacher, composer, performer, and graduate of Duke University with a major in music.

I was a little dubious about how the music would sound. ?I imagined cheesy lyrics, annoying sounds of grown men singing in babyish voices, and tinny, whiny sounds that make your ears want to bleed. I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard when I played the first CD.

First of all, there are no lyrics, which is lovely. ?It is less distracting and doesn?t get stuck in your head the way that songs such as ?The Wheels on the Bus? do.

Second, the music is very mellow and easy to listen to. Even after I put my daughter down for a nap, I forgot that it was on. ?It doesn?t bother me at all.? The tones are very soft and slow, nothing hyperactive or irritating. The little one likes it as well.

I tested out the music on a day when my daughter was very cranky and overtired.? The second the music began, she calmed down and looked in the direction that the sound was coming from. She was instantly soothed!

The fun part is, if husband and I want to sing the lyrics to the familiar tunes, we can. ?It?s rare that parents and babies can enjoy the same music, but with the Baby Blanket Cd?s they can. Not only is the music soothing to baby and pleasant to listen to, but fun for us parents since it is created from songs we are familiar with.

After looking at the website, I have decided that I definitely need to order some of their other CD?s. ?My husband is excited about the Garth Brooks and Simon & Garfunkel! ?You can even download your favorites on iTunes.
