The study looked at a range of different research subjects, including modest households in rural India, middle-income Canadian dads, and working professionals living in Hong Kong.

Results consistently showed that a single savings goal worked better than multiple goals. Individual studies also found single goals worked particularly well when it was harder to save. Having multiple goals resulted in people thinking about trade-offs between goals, rather than focusing on implementing their savings plan.

The findings suggest that financial or savings advisors may want to take a different tack with their clients. Banks sometimes advertise a list of reasons to save, but such a message could "backfire" says the study, because that introduces multiple goals, leading to eventual failure in clients' savings plans.

"The most common mistake is to emphasize numerous reasons to save," says Prof. Zhao. "They should revise their approach."

Of course most of us have more than one thing we need to save for, such as retirement, a child's education and funds for a rainy day. In that case, Prof. Zhao suggests finding a way to integrate seemingly competing goals into a single more abstract goal, such as achieving financial independence or flexibility.

That said, there is only so long I can, in good conscience, let that big organizational ?but? get in the way (as in, ?I really want to deal with it, buuuuuttt?.?). If you?ve been putting it off, the change of seasons is actually the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and get to the bottom of that mess in your garage. In that spirit, I?ve put together a list of must-have tools and top tips to get you over your inertia and on your way to a shipshape space.

Before you get started, look through your belongings to see if you have these essential tools. If not, hit the stores; you won?t want to get started without them.

Once you are ready to dig in and tackle your mess, stop looking at the big picture. Garages tend to be large projects that can overwhelm. Instead, pick one small area, like a workbench, to focus on first. Declutter it completely before moving on to another small space. If not having enough time is the thing that has been holding you back, make a garage-detoxification ?appointment? with yourself after dinner every night this week for 30 minutes. You?ll be amazed at how much progress you can make in small chunks of time. Here are some other good things to consider as you tackle the mess.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? President Barack Obama is heading to Denver to pitch his jobs plan in the city where he accepted the Democratic nomination. But as he's acknowledged at fundraisers up and down the West Coast, this election isn't like 2008.

Obama told a star-studded Hollywood fundraiser Monday night that this time around people are weary, and the energy of 2008 ? when he was an exciting new face ? is going to have to be generated in a different way.

He urged guests, including actors Eva Longoria, Danny DeVito and Jack Black, not to get tired now. "This is when we're tested," he said.

Obama has held seven fundraisers over two days in Washington state and California in advance of an important fundraising deadline. Tuesday in Denver, he will tour a high school and then speak about the $450 billion jobs plan, mixing tax credits and public works spending, that he wants Congress to pass.

With the economy stuck and unemployment high as the 2012 campaign heats up, Obama has been reminding supporters that he never told them re-election would be easy. He's also getting in some shots at the GOP presidential field.

"I urge all of you to watch some of these Republican debates. It's a different vision about who we are, who we stand for," Obama told about 120 Hollywood supporters at Los Angeles' Fig & Olive restaurant. Guests paid $17,900 each to attend.

The American people want a "bold and generous" vision of America, Obama said, not the "cramped" one he said the Republicans are offering. "That's what this election is about. It's about values, it's about character, it's about who we are."

TOPEKA, Kan. ? Environmentalists told officials from the U.S. State Department on Monday they opposed the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, claiming it would move a "dirtier" and "environmentally devastating form of energy" from Canada through Kansas and other states to the Texas coast.

Rabbi Moti Rieber, coordinator of the Kansas Interfaith Power & Light, said he and others in his coalition disagreed with the State Department's report, which said there are unlikely to be any serious environmental problems with the proposed 1,700-mile pipeline. Rieber said he strongly opposed the pipeline, which he called a "direct threat" to the Kansas environment.

"Exploring tar sands will keep us hooked on this form of oil for another 50 years," Rieber said. "The Keystone XL pipeline represents not energy independence but a new dependence on an even dirtier environmentally devastating form of energy.

"An energy policy that moves the nation toward an even dirtier form of oil and involves such devastation of God's creation represents a profound moral failure," he said.

Republican Gov. Sam Brownback kicked off the meeting, attended by about 200 supporters and opponents. Brownback said that while he supports exploring alternative energy sources like wind and solar, he also supports building the $7 billion Keystone XL pipeline because "for the foreseeable able future we're going to need oil."

"I think this is an important security for the United States," Brownback said. "I have been at the front end and the back end of this pipeline. I have been where the oil sands are developed and processed in Canada, and I've been to oil refineries in Kansas where they use the oil sands," he said.

"The idea of us being able ... to have that oil source from a friendly nation that's next door rather than shipping oil in tankers from half way around the world in a many times unstable environment is a good thing for us. It's a good thing for America, a good thing for Kansas."

David Barnett, financial secretary for the Pipeliners Union 798, of Tulsa, Okla., said losing the pipeline would cost his members "up in the millions of dollars" in paychecks.

"If common sense prevails it should get approved," Barnett said before the three-hour meeting began. "We have the world's best welders, pipefitters ... ready to build this project, and I think this project will start literally the next day once they decide."

Several other members of labor unions, citing high unemployment figures and tough economy, also said they want to see the project move forward.

The pipeline would move tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, and hook up to Calgary-based TransCanads's existing pipelines and move oil to Oklahoma and the Gulf of Mexico.

The meetings Monday in Topeka and Port Arthur, Texas, kick off this week's series of hearings on the Keystone XL pipeline with meetings Monday in Topeka, Kan., and Port Arthur, Texas.

Officials from the State Department said they don't plan to answer any questions, reserving most of the time for comments from the public.

Other meetings have been scheduled this week in Montana, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Even in that deeply conservative state there is growing concern about the pipeline's effect on the Ogallala Aquifer, a vast subterranean reservoir that spans a large swath of the Great Plains and provides water to much of Nebraska and seven other states.

The State Department, which has to approve the pipeline because it would cross the U.S.-Canada border, is expected to decide by the end of the year. The sessions are likely to focus on the department's final draft of its environmental impact statement on the pipeline, which found that special conditions put on the pipeline would result in a project with a "degree of safety greater than any typically constructed domestic oil pipeline system under current regulations."

TransCanada and its supporters say the pipeline would mean tens of thousands of U.S. jobs and more energy security for the country.

"If the activists feel that they're facing an uphill battle, it's because the facts don't support their overheated rhetoric," TransCanada spokesman Shawn Howard said earlier. "It has been shown that the outrageous claims these groups have made aren't true."

Concerns are growing that the global economy could be headed into another recession, and retailers did not exactly have a scintillating holiday season last year. Libya PM calls on world to help in rebuilding (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Libya's de facto prime minister on Saturday called on the United Nations to unfreeze all frozen Libyan assets and urged the world community to stand beside his nation in its difficult road to reconstruction and national reconciliation.

To loud applause, National Transitional Council premier Mahmoud Jibril addressed the U.N. General Assembly, saying he was saddened by the thousands who had died in the fight to topple Moammar Gadhafi and whose "sacred blood was shed to write a new history for a new Libya."

In his first address to the world body since Gadhafi's ouster from 42 years in power, Jibril spoke from the same rostrum where, two years earlier, Gadhafi ripped apart a copy of the world body's charter during a lengthy rant. Jibril ridiculed that as "a pathetic theatrical move."

"A new Libya is coming to life," Jibril said, one that seeks to rebuild and reach out to the global community. He said the new nation's vision is one of "a state of democracy, ruled by a clear unambiguous constitution setting forth rights and obligations, that does not discriminate between male or female, one community or another, one political belief or another, or east or west."

Jibril spoke as the former rebels pushed into Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte, in central Libya, on Saturday. NTC officials promised to announce an interim government in a week. The NTC has struggled to form a Cabinet, with debates still ongoing about several key issues, including the distribution of ministries between the west and east of the country. The east, from where the rebellion against Gadhafi gained momentum, was long marginalized under the ousted regime.

Jibril alluded to those challenges in his speech, saying that one key issue was agreeing on the rules of participation in the new government and juggling the expectations of the Libyan people as well as the expectations of the world community.

He said that "national unity without a united land, without national reconciliation, is a dream" and that it was of the "utmost importance" to put to a referendum a draft constitution that would guarantee rights for all in Libya. He did not, however, discuss timing.

Jibril, in urging the world community to back the NTC, said the unfreezing of some assets already has been ordered but vast sums are still withheld. That "does not rise to what is required in order to assure reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country," he said.

Libya's foreign assets, which are in the range of $110 billion, were largely frozen as part of a series of U.N. and Western sanctions on the now-ousted regime shortly after the civil war began in mid-February.

The Libyans have complained that the release has been moving slowly and that they are in dire need of money, not just to pay salaries and cover expenses, but also to begin the extensive reconstruction necessary after the conflict. Huge expenses were also expected to overcome the underdevelopment that prevailed during Gadhafi's regime.

The OPEC member was producing about 1.6 million barrels of crude oil per day at the start of the war, but that output largely ended during the war. Experts and analysts estimate it could take at least a year for them to reach comparable levels.

"The assets freeze on our funds must be lifted as urgently as possible," Jibril said, urging the Security Council to take action to unblock the assets. He assured the world that while pockets of resistance remained, the old regime was now history.

Jibril said the country faced daunting challenges aside from cementing a political structure.

"We do not claim to have a magic wand, as Moammar Gadhafi claimed when he looked at himself in the mirror and suddenly discovered that he is an almighty prophet with a solution to every problem on earth, except for Libya's problems," said Jibril.

Four decades of Gadhafi rule left 20 percent of the population living in poverty, created the region's worst educational and health care systems, left a collapsing infrastructure and unemployment among youths at over 30 percent, he said. "These are the solutions handed us by Moammar Gadhafi," he said.

An article by the American Diabetes Association in Diabetes Care links lack of sleep to higher blood sugar levels and thus possible type 2 diabetes risk.

Researchers say they are uncertain whether lack of adequate sleep causes changes in the regulation of blood sugar, the body?s sensitivity to insulin, or if insulin secretion is reduced, however the results clearly showed higher blood sugar levels are present in individuals who have not had a full night?s rest.

The scientists studied a cross section of 62 obese adolescents at the Clinical Translational Research Centre and Sleep Laboratory in a Tertiary Care Children?s Hospital with an average age of 14, who were monitored over a 36 hour period. The test subjects underwent oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), anthropometric measurements, overnight polysomnography, and a frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test (FSIGT).

Levels of insulin and blood sugar level were then calculated and compared with the amount of sleep the individual had had.

Dr. Dorit Koren, an author of the study and a pediatric endocrinologist at Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia concluded:

?Our study found to keep glucose levels stable, the optimal amount of sleep for teenagers is 7.5 to 8.5 hours per night.?

There were also some indications that lack of sleep decreases insulin production.

In future research Dr. Koren plans to look at teenagers in their home environment. Funding for the study was provided by the Pennsylvania State Tobacco Settlement Fund and the U.S. National Institutes of Health?s National Center for Research Resources.

Dr Koren said:

?In the meantime, our study reinforces the idea that getting adequate sleep in adolescence may help protect against type 2 diabetes,?

ITHACA, N.Y. Cornell University researchers are utilizing the complete genome sequences of people alive today to shed light on events at the dawn of human history, such as the times of divergence of early human populations and of the "out of Africa" migration of the ancestors of modern Europeans, Asians, and other non-African groups.

Researchers studied the genomes of people from East Asian, European, and western and southern African descent and discovered that the San, an indigenous group of hunter gatherers from southern Africa, diverged from other human populations earlier than previously thought about 130,000 years ago. In comparison, the ancestors of modern Eurasian populations migrated from Africa only about 50,000 years ago. The study is published in the Sept. 18 issue of Nature Genetics.

Previous studies of human demography have primarily relied on mitochondrial DNA from the maternal line or Y-chromosomal DNA passed from fathers to their sons. The Cornell study uses the full genome of each individual, providing a richer, more complete picture of human evolution.

"The use of genome-wide data gives you much more confidence that you are getting the right answer," said Adam Siepel, Cornell associate professor of biological statistics and computational biology, and senior author of the paper. "With mitochondrial DNA, you are only looking at one family tree, with one pathway from each individual to its ancestors. We are sampling from all possible pathways."

"What's unusual about our methods is that, not only do they use complete genome sequences, but they consider several populations at once," said Ilan Gronau, the paper's lead author and a postdoctoral associate in Siepel's lab. "This is the first paper to put all of these pieces together."

Previous studies estimated that modern humans arose roughly 200,000 years ago in eastern or southern Africa; and that the indigenous hunting-and-gathering central and southern African San people one of the most genetically divergent human populations diverged from other Africans about 100,000 years ago.

But this study shows that the San people split from other African populations about 130,000 years ago (somewhere between 108,000 and 157,000 years ago). The estimate of an "out of Africa" migration of about 50,000 years ago is consistent with recent findings using other methods, the researchers said.
